The image shows the Drum Major of the 6th Battalion, the Royal Melbourne Regiment between 1936-1960. He wears the uniform of the regiment which is similar to that of the Royal Fusiliers, with whom the 6th Battalion was affiliated. This service was to dedicate a Memorial to Australian & British Servicemen who died at Sandakan and Ranau, North Borneo 1942 - 1945. It was unveiled at Strathdale Park Bendigo on 9.4.1995. These items come from Warrnambool High School in the 1930s. Warrnambool High School was established as an Agricultural High School in 1907 and, after a merger with Warrnambool North Technical School, it is known today as Warrnamboool College. The items came from Mirth Marfell, the daughter of Henry and Helena Marfell, who was born in Warrnambool in 1919 and went to Warrnambool High School in the 1920s and 30s. Her grandfather, John Marfell, a Warrnambool hay and corn dealer and miller connected to the Warrnambool Co-operative Milling Company, was prominent in community and civic affairs in the town. Mirth Marfell completed her nursing training at the Warrnambool Base Hospital and served in the Australian Army Nursing Service in World War Two for five years. She then became the first Australian nursing organizer for the Victorian Royal College of Nursing. This is an army officer’s hat from the Australian Army. It dates back to the 1940s before the word ‘Commonwealth’ was deleted in 1949 from the name of the military forces. The Australian Army has used the rising sun emblem in its official insignia since the early 1900s. The owner of this hat is not known. This hat has no known local provenance but is retained for display purposes.This is a khaki hat with an oval padded crown and a rounded peak. The top has four metal eyeleted air holes. The badge on the hat has the Rising Sun emblem. There is a brown leather strap round the brim attached by metal buttons. The inside of the hat has a blue cloth lining with a square of cellophane. There is a grey leather internal band in the peak section overlaid with black material. There is some slight staining inside the hat. Australian Commonwealth Military Forces

These badges and buttons belonged to Major Charles Rogers, a well known Warrnambool personality of the 1930s, 40s and 50s. He was a Light horseman who was in the Guard of Honour for the Duke of Gloucester in 1934 when he opened the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance during the Victorian Centenary Celebrations. In Warrnambool he was a well known horseman leading parades and celebrations and judging equine events for the Warrnambool Agricultural Show. He died in 1961, These items are of interest as they belonged to Major Charles Rogers an important 20th century Army person. It may have belonged to Donald Robert McDonald (b. 1908) who enlisted in the Australian Army in 1942 and was discharged in 1946. He was a bombardier in the 2/4 Aust.
