These 34 photographs were taken at Flag Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the School of Military Survey (SMS) at Latchford Barracks, Bonegilla in May 1990. The two RASvy units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash softball, tennis, touch football, tug-of-war and volleyball. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and snooker. The Flag handover and speeches were held in SMS’s Café Slater recreation/morning tea area. Over several decades the Australian Army has been rotating a rifle company through the Australian Base at Butterworth, Penang, Malaysia. These two photographs of a contingent from the Army Survey Regiment lowering the Australian flag were taken on Australia Day in Kerang, Victoria on the 26th of January 1996. Most units of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) provide contingents to regional towns in their local area to assist in commemoration ceremonies on days of national significance, such as Australia Day, ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. This was most likely one of the last occasions before the closure of the Army Survey Regiment. Survey Corps Flags of this type were produced mid to late 1970's and distributed to all Survey Corps Units. This flag was issued to the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo and flew during daylight hours on the Unit flag pole at Fortuna Villa for many years. The flag was ceremonially marched out of the gate on the day that the Army Survey Regiment was disbanded in 1996. Leading the flag bearer party is the Commanding Officer of the Army Survey Regiment LTCol Duncan Burns followed by the band of the Fortuna Pipes and Drums.A full size Corps Flag, purple with 18cm horizontal white stripe. These eight photos of the Army Survey Regiment’s Tug-of-War Team were most likely taken at Simpson Barracks, Watsonia in circa 1989. There is no information available on why the unit sent the team to Melbourne, the occasion, and the winner of this contest. It may have been a military athletics carnival held to commemorate Australia’s First Fleet bi- centenary, noting there was other members of Army Svy Regt on the bus who were not part of this team. The team’s coach was WO1 Ken Slater. These photographs were taken at Flag Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the School of Military Survey, at Bendigo on the 10th of October 1986. The two RASvy units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash softball, tennis, touch football, tug-of-war and volleyball. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and snooker. The scoreboard in the background in photo .11P indicated an emphatic victory for the Army Survey Regiment.This is a set of 13 photographs of Flag Day, Army Survey Regiment versus the School of Military Survey, at Bendigo on the 10th of October 1986. Dr Ian Stephen MacLeod Murphy (1905-1981) studied at Geelong College (1919-1922) and then Melbourne University (1929-1937). He enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy in 1939 and served as a navy surgeon for the duration of World War II. He moved to Emerald in 1947 after running a successful medical practice in Hampton, with the intention of retiring and breeding turkeys. But Emerald and the surrounding districts had no doctor, so for the next 34 years, Dr. Murphy provided tireless medical care to the local community. Dr Murphy was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1977 for devotion to the health of the community. He died in 1981 at the age of 76 years and a Memorial Fund was set up in his name to provide support for local students studying Medicine.
