This is a book of music produced by Allan & Co. English- born George Allan (1826-1897) was a pioneer singing teacher in Melbourne who joined the music warehouse of Wilkie and Webster in 1862 and became the sole proprietor in 1874. By the late 1870s Allan & Co was the largest music warehouse in the Southern Hemisphere. It was bought by Brashs Stores in 1998 and since then it has had a series of other owners operating on a limited scale. Allan & Co. had a music warehouse in Warrnambool later in the 20th century. The supplier of this music item in Warrnambool was Mrs Fanny Rowan (nee Lavery) who had a music store at 143 Liebig Street after 1918. Later, in the 1930s, she had a music and stationery shop in the Oddfellows Hall and, as the owner of the building, also operated the Plaza Cinema in that building. This item is of some interest mainly because it was sold by Mrs Fanny Rowan, a prominent Warrnambool businesswoman in the first half of the 20th century. It is also of interest because it is an example of the music produced by Allan and Co, at one time the largest supplier of music books in Australia. Also Warrnambool had for some time an Allans Music Store at 76 Liebig Street. This is a soft-cover book of 50 pages containing the music of well-known community songs. The pages were stapled but the staples have been removed and there are rust marks and some tearing where the staples were removed. The book has a buff-coloured cover with brown printed material on the back and front covers. The back contains a list of the music titles in another booklet, ‘Primary Melodies’. The front cover has a stamp of the music shop of Mrs Rowan of Liebig street, Warrnambool and there is a brown border of two lines on the front cover. The inside first page has a list of contents. Inspired by a visit to the USA in the early 1950s, Hoyts' Southern Division manager George Griffith Jnr, formed a syndicate to build Australia’s first Drive-in located in Burwood. Drive-ins soon spread throughout the country. One of the earliest Skyline Drive-ins in rural Victoria was built in Wodonga, opening in 1956. It was located on the southwest corner of Melrose Drive and Melbourne Road and had a capacity of 643 vehicles. Its first screening was "The Broken Lance" with Richard Widmark, Spencer and Robert Wagner. The first manager of Skyline was Jim Robinson. The original screen was made from timber but had to be replaced only 20 years later with an all steel structure. The Wodonga Skyline became part of the Hoyts Country Theatres circuit and was later joined by the Stargazer drive-in located in Albury. Unlike most drive-in theatres, the snack bar was located under the screen. This allowed it to operate during the day to cater to travellers passing on the Hume Highway. When Hoyts decided to sell most of the regional circuit, the Skyline was purchased by the operator of the Albury Cinema, Mr A. Smith in conjunction with Village Roadshow. The Skyline closed in 1984 and was demolished in 1987. EDHS Newsletter No. 272 October 2023 Our next meeting will be a special evening, if not a little unusual. On pages 3 and 4 in this newsletter edition there are articles about Eltham Films, with particular reference to the film ‘The Prize’, made by Tim Burstall in 1958/59. As Burstall had strong connections with Eltham it would have been an easy decision for him and his associates to use the local area as the setting for his first film. Following this film Burstall went on to make many more. He became a key figure in Australian postwar cinema and was instrumental in helping to rebuild the Australian film industry, at a time when it had been effectively dead for years. At this EDHS meeting we will view this film, or should we say review this film, stopping at times to attempt to identify the main actors and where certain scenes were filmed around Eltham. Some locations may be more obvious than others. The actors are mainly children playing the characters in the film. Stathi Raftopoulos is pictured performing as a magician under the name of 'Rafto the Magician'. Stathi Raftopoulos pursued a range of creative interests throughout his lifetime in the Greek and the broader Australian communities. Interests included performing as a magician, acting in Greek theatre productions, poetry writing and reciting, Ithacan family history, film and cinema, and painting. He was also an avid collector of memorabilia. At Ithacan funerals Stathi would be called upon to recite a poem in memory of the deceased which was always so nostalgic and evocative of the Ithacan migrant experience that there would be hardly a dry eye in the church.A black and white photograph of a man dressed in a dinner suit and wearing a top hat. The Garfield Picture Theatre was built in 1924 for Martin Donohue, and according to Mr H. Arnold, who wrote a history of the theatre, it was leased to J. Taylor. It was said to have seated 800 people, and dances were held on Friday evenings with pictures shown on Saturday nights. The theatre was one of the many movie-viewing venues constructed during the Australia-wide boom in cinema building in the 1920s. The Garfield Picture Theatre was Cardinia Shire’s first cinema in the region, followed by Kooweerup’s Wattle Theatre and Pakenham’s King’s Picture Theatre which opened in mid to late 1927. The theatre is significant to the area as it’s one of the few picture theatre buildings remaining in the shire. The Garfield Picture Theatre was not only the main entertainment hub for the area, but it was the town’s first source of electricity. The theatre closed in 1962 and reopened in the 1980s as the Garfield Trading Centre, owned by Sam Jensen, who used to sell used furniture, bric-a-brac and antiques. The theatre stayed that way until 2001, when renovations began by owners Fred and Susan Perez. The theatre was in need of some serious repair and improvement. Fred and Susan spent 17 years relaying and polishing the original floorboards, installing roof insulation, as well as building a commercial kitchen, inside toilets with a disable toilet, upstairs living quarters, full verandah, and drainage and decking around the whole outer edge of the theatre. ​The theatre is a well-preserved and gabled red brick building, with internal renovations creating a grander experience than the original. The front facade still has its original raised cement letters `Garfield Picture Theatre' and sits above a deep cantilever street verandah which extends the front of the building. The Garfield Picture Theatre made a triumphant return as an entertainment venue on Sunday 03 July 2016, and now hosts various music events and is a great venue for weddings, corporate events and dances.
