Although the 'Waler' was specifically bred for the Australian bush it proved a tough, reliable mount in the desert battles in the Middle East during WW1. Over 130,000 were sent overseas and of these 15,000 served with the Light Horse. Tpr Bartlett was the first casualty of the 4th Light Horse Regiment at Gallipoli. Tpr Bartlett enlisted on 18 August 1914 at Broadmeadows Vic and was posted to A Squadron 4th Australian Light Horse Regiment. He embarked for Egypt on HMAT Wiltshire on 19 Oct 1914 then going ashore on Gallipoli on 21 May 1915. At 8:00 pm Trooper Bartlett was struck in the stomach by either shrapnel or gunfire. His wounds were dressed and he was evacuated. He died of wounds and was buried at sea on 24 May 1915. The 4th Australian Light Horse Regiment is an ancestor unit of the modern day 4th/19th Prince of Wales's Light Horse Regiment. The Unit History Room is the custodian of its history. By 1914, when Australia joined the war against Germany, there were 23 Light Horse regiments of militia volunteers. Many men from these units joined the Light Horse regiments of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). Initially Australia promised four regiments of Light Horse, 2000 men, to fight in the British cause. By the end of the war, 16 regiments would be in action.The Light Horse were seen as the “national arm of Australia’s defence” and young men, most from the country, flocked to join. This photograph is of a bronze sculpture of an Australian Light Horseman. The sculptured was created by renowned Australian sculptor Carl Valerius. The sculpture is now located in the National Boer War Memorial, Anzac Parade in Canberra, ACT, Australia. Australia did not field traditional cavalry in the Boer and WWI Wars. Instead, it deployed mounted infantry known as the Australian Light Horse, who rode horses (mostly Walers) to battle but fought on foot. They became famous in the Sinai–Palestine campaign, including the charge at Beersheba. Australia shipped approximately 120,000 horses overseas during WWI, about 39,000 went with the Light Horse to Egypt and Palestine.
