The first churches in what is now the City of Casey/Cardinia Shire area were located in Cranbourne and Berwick, so although the Avonsleigh Church of Christ was the fourth church to be built in the region, it was the first in the hills. The Church is located at 17 Avon Road, Avonsleigh. The trees visible in the photograph appear at the front of the property, running parallel to the road, suggesting that the photograph depicts the rear of the building. Although it is known that a Church of Christ was built on the current site in 1887, more research is needed to ascertain whether it is the original building. Churches of Christ are autonomous congregations that emerged from the American Restoration movements led by Barton W. Stone and Thomas Campbell. One source suggests that the Churches of Christ were established in Australia as early as 1845, when a British immigrant who had learned of the denomination in New Zealand joined a Scottish Baptist Church in Adelaide who shifted focus as a result of his testimony. By 1865 there were five churches in the Southern region of Australia, with 253 adherents.The photograph is significant as an image of Avonsleigh Church of Christ as it appeared towards the end of the Twentieth Century. Four of the men pictured are known: Bob Welch, Ralph Welch, Cliff McKenzie, and Ian McKenzie. It is believed that this photograph was taken in the mid 1940s. There are two other unaccessioned copies of this item in our collection; both are with it in its folder.This image represents the historical timber industry, which played a very significant role in local economies for decades.This item is a printed black and white photograph. The photograph is centered, with decorative framing forming a 10-15mm margin around it. The photograph depicts five men working at a sawmill; one in the foreground operating a saw, and four in the background moving a large log. They are under the cover of a tin roof, but with open walls. The reverse features handwritten annotations in pen and pencil - the handwriting in pen appearing to be older - and a handwritten accession number. He died in a car accident, when the car he was driving struck a tree stump. He was the last survivor of his brothers (Geoffrey and Laurence), both of which also tragically died young - Laurence (whose medals are also in our collection under VEMU2307) in Malaya during the war, and Geoffrey gored by a bull at home.J. Kennedy was a member of a local family who served in the Second World War and died tragically like his brothers, forming an important story of local community history.A set of five medals, including the 1939-45 Medal (a), the Defence Medal (b), the Rising Sun Badge (c), the 1939-1945 Star (d), and the Pacific Star (e). a) 1939-1945 Medal: A round, silver-coloured cupronickel medal 36 millimeters in diameter with a red, white, and blue vertically striped ribbon. The obverse relief shows the crowned effigy of George VI surrounded by a Latin legend text. The reverse relief shows a lion standing atop a defeated two-headed dragon. Lettering is also present on the edge. b) The Defence Medal: A round, silver-coloured cupronickel medal 36 millimeters in diameter with a green, orange and black vertically striped ribbon. The obverse relief shows the uncrowned effigy of George VI surrounded by a Latin legend text. The reverse relief shows the Royal Crown resting on an oak sapling, flanked by a lion and a lioness above stylised waves. Lettering is also present on the edge. c) Rising Sun Badge: The 1904-49 edition of the rising sun badge - a brass lapel badge centered on a crown with a semi-circle of sun rays radiating up from it. Below the crown is a scroll with text. d) 1939-1945 Star: A six-pointed star struck in yellow brass to fit in a 44 millimetre diameter circle. While short lived (and not very successful,) the influx of people led to the early timber and farming industries that built the communities that now exist. The image on the postcard shows typical working conditions on more advanced operations, using significant diversions of creeks to provide water for sluicing while the creek bed below the diversion would be dried and exposed to allow workers to remove the material for processing in the hydraulic sluice. The correspondence on the postcard, whilst sometimes difficult to read, helps to paint a picture of life in the district, and how people communicated in this earlier period. The recipient of the postcard is a prominent member of the early Gembrook community, John Ure, who ran various businesses including a cheese factory in Silver Hills/North Gembrook. The lack of legible postage date opens up many mysteries about this item, as well as different references to the person in the sluice being "Tom Collins"The record shows strong significance, depicting working conditions and technology of early gold mining in the Emerald area. Even more-so, the personal/commercial correspondence depicts a customer ordering cheese from the local cheese factory, presumably before electric communication.Black and White rectangular postcard printed on laminated card stock, personal correspondence. This postcard depicts hydraulic sluicing in the Emerald area of Victoria. Two bearded workers, one wearing a hat, are posing in the mid ground. One is standing in the sluice itself and one standing above on the embankment with shovel in hand. Native forest surrounds the workings with roots exposed, while the sluice itself runs vertical through the frame, roughly cut into the ground.
