Ernest Samuel Shillinglaw married Anna Lucy Barlow in 1924. They resided in Eltham in 1924. By 1925 they were farming in Dalmore, Victoria. Their first child, a son, Leslie Ernest was born in Dalmore, Vic. in 1925. By 1927 they were living at 33 Miles Street, Ivanhoe where their second child, a daughter, Melva Lucy was born in 1927. By 1936 the family was living at Myer's Creek, Healeville close to Mary Ann Shillinglaw who was resident at The Ferns, Healeville. In 1937 they moved to Badger Creek, Healesville where they remained at least till 1954. POSTCARD 1905-1940s Like the carte-de-visite, postcards enjoyed a collecting craze by large numbers of people, and were often kept in albums through which the interested visitor could browse. Postcards were posted or exchanged in huge numbers. Postal authorities in Australia only allowed the private printing of postcards from 1898. At this time the back of the card was reserved for the address and postage stamp, and the front was used for the message and a picture. In 1902 British authorities allowed a "divided back", so that the left side could be used for the message, the right side for the address and stamp, and the whole of the front was devoted to the picture. Nicholas Caire was born on Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1837. He arrived in Adelaide with his parents in about 1860. In 1867, following photographic journeys in Gippsland, he opened a studio in Adelaide. From 1870 to 1876 he lived and worked in Talbot in Central Victoria. In 1876 he purchased T. F. Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. As a photographer, he travelled extensively through Victoria, photographing places few of his contemporaries had previously seen. He died in 1918. Six Aboriginal reserves were established during the 1860s. These were under the control of the Board for the Protection of Aborigines. Four were Christian missions receiving government aid. These were Lake Tyers (Anglican) and Ramahyuck (Presbyterian/Moravian) in eastern Victoria for the Gunai/Kurnai clans; Ebenezer (Moravian) in north-west Victoria for the clans of the Wimmera and Lower Murray; and Lake Condah (Anglican) in south-west Victoria. The other two were secular government controlled reserves: Framlingham which, like Lake Condah, was established for the Mara-speaking Gunditjmara and Kirrae-wurrung people of south-west Victoria; and Coranderrk, located about 60 kilometres north-east of Melbourne, for the Kulin clans of central Victoria. Ken HOVENDEN Working at Bendigo Pottery from April 1972 at the age of 17, Ken Hovenden was also involved in the Lillydale Pottery venture. He worked at Cannie Ridge Pottery for a time, exhibiting work there in 1979. Known as a great thrower, his work featured beautifully fitted lids and quantities of mugs of identical size. In the 1980s, he set up his own pottery at Malmsbury and sold his work through Bangles Gallery at Cobargo. From late 1988 to 1997, he worked under the business name Shiloh Pottery in Castlemaine. His work often features a unique gum leaf design on individually thrown work. William Brian (Badger) BATES (1947- ) Born Wilcannia Barkantji Badger Bates is a Barkantji Elder, political activist and contemporary artist. Known primarily for printmaking, wood and stone carving, his work is intrinsically linked to his lifelong fight for the safety and health of the Barka (the Darling River).'Gitji Woman' is carved from a very old piece of log found at Wittabrinna Creek near Tibooburra, Western New South Wales. The tree was dead for 60-80 years, and was hollow inside. "I could see a figure in the wood so I folowed the shapes already three. The woman has a drawn out figure with long fingers and is coming out of the log, she is an ancestral spirit.
