The periods that she identified included 1845-1880, 1880-1893, 1893-1921, 1921-1933, 1933-1943, and Post-War Development. These periods were selected as they represented periods of rapid growth or decline in urban development. An obvious starting point for Sanderson’s groupings involved population growth and the associated economic cycles. These cycles also highlighted urban expansion onto land that was predominantly rural, although in other cases it represented the decline and breakup of large estates. A number of the plans in the Kew Historical Society’s collection can also be found in other collections, such as those of the State Library of Victoria and the Boroondara Library Service. A number are however unique to the collection.The Kew Historical Society collection includes almost 100 subdivision plans pertaining to suburbs of the City of Melbourne. Most of these are of Kew, Kew East or Studley Park, although a smaller number are plans of Camberwell, Deepdene, Balwyn and Hawthorn. It is believed that the majority of the plans were gifted to the Society by persons connected with the real estate firm - J. R. Mathers and McMillan, 136 Cotham Road, Kew. The Plans in the collection are rarely in pristine form, being working plans on which the agent would write notes and record lots sold and the prices of these. The subdivision plans are historically significant examples of the growth of urban Melbourne from the beginning of the 20th Century up until the 1980s. A number of the plans are double-sided and often include a photograph on the reverse. A number of the latter are by noted photographers such as J.E. Barnes.When the old Kew Golf Links was subdivided in the mid 1920s, the developers were able to break the sale into sections. The third section included eighty lots. The lots faced Kilby Road, Kodak Avenue, Belford Road, Baker Avenue, Mathers Avenue, and White Avenue. [Kodak Avenue was renamed Page Avenue at a later date].The ‘Kew Conservation Study (1988) notes that ‘On the subdivision plan, Kodak’s involvement is commemorated by the naming of the streets after Company directors, and their decision to not proceed with the construction of the factory is explained as a response to the increase in the value of the land. This explanation may have been Estate Agent’s hyperbole, as the Kodak Company records suggest that the land, with its wide creek gully, was unsuitable and too small for its purposes.subdivision plans - kew, old kew golf links estate - third section -

Greaves, a baker and pastrycook In Allansford in the first half of the 20th century. Allansford is a township 10 kilometres east of Warrnambool, now incorporated into the City of Warrnambool. The ledger contains details of the Greaves business sales of goods, mostly bread, from 1946 to 1948 and includes the names of the customers, the orders and the moneys owing. The bakery served many nearby areas including Wangoom, Hopkins Point, Cudgee, Mepunga, Naringal and Lake Glllear. This ledger is of interest as it illustrates the size of the Allansford bakery and contains many names of people in the area in the 1940s, making it a valuable research object.This is a ledger with a black cover and leather coverings at the corners and a brown leather spine. The red label on the spine has gold lettering and ornamental edges. The inside of the cover has a red mottled pattern and has tape and string stitching. A maker's label is also inside the front cover. The pages are ruled with red lines and contain handwritten entries. There are some loose invoices. The land sold for £4000 and there was a shed on the land (called the ‘Office’) which George O’Grady indicated he wished to be included in the sale. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool area, erecting many buildings, including the Wangoom Presbyterian Church. In 1865 he opened a store in Timor Street Warrnambool, selling groceries, hardware, china and glassware. By 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened in Wangoom, Cudgee, Nullawarre, South Warrnambool and West Warrnambool. After William Swinton died his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split with George Swinton and Sons selling clothing, furnishings and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling seeds, produce and hardware. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding shop in Timor St Warrnambool.These items are of some interest as being connected to the Warrnambool business of Swintons Pty Ltd. There is a reference in the Warrnambool Examiner newspaper to an Adam Callander, a Port Fairy baker whose wife Alice committed suicide in 1870 and, more importantly, a reference to a Miss Callender arriving as a ship passenger to Warrnambool in July 1854. ...This book was given in 1847 to E. Callender by an unknown person (‘C.E –‘). There is a reference in the Warrnambool Examiner newspaper to an Adam Callander, a Port Fairy baker whose wife Alice committed suicide in 1870 and, more importantly, a reference to a Miss Callender arriving as a ship passenger to Warrnambool in July 1854. There is a record of Eliza Callender marrying Peter McFarlane in 1858. The book may have been a New Years’ Day present or a birthday present or a presentation to someone leaving England to migrate to Australia. This book is kept because of its inscription and its early date (1847 – some months before Warrnambool was founded). Further research may reveal the extent of the book’s significance. This is hard cover book of 320 pages. The cover is dark brown with embossed scrolls on the front cover and gold lettering on the spine. The book has eight chapters, including a biography of the author, Matthew Henry, and two black and white sketches. On the first page is the stamp of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. The inscription is handwritten in black ink. The cover is slightly stained.‘To E.
