The Garden of the Grieving Mother is an acknowledgement of the trauma, grief and anxiety felt by the families of Australian servicemen and women. Of the 3,801 WWI service men and women commemorated in the Ballarat Avenue of Honour, 1 in 5 made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives. At the centre of the memorial space is a bronze sculpture of a mother clutching a photograph of her son by sculptor Peter Corlett who has created many war memorial public artworks. Booklet printed with an address area within a leaf and on the rear, an area where the sender could write their name. Produced by The Valentine Publishing Co. Pty Ltd Melbourne. Souvenir dish featuring transfer print of the Entrance to the Avenue of Honour 14 Miles Long. The print foregrounds the Arch of Victory Ballarat and was made for Ballarat firm of R. Tunbridge & Sons. Early example of fine English porcelain with a new Ballarat landmark for the more discriminating buyer as opposed to the more common mass produced transfer printed items made in Czechoslovakia. The Ballarat Avenue of Honour is the longest surviving such memorial avenue to the Great War in the world and together with its entrance arch was officially opened by the Prince of Wales in June 1920.Souvenir dish made in England for local Australian sales.
