A professional tailoress, Viola Ayling was also a talented amateur potter, creating her ceramics at her home in Pakington Street, where she had an internal studio and a handmade, wood-fired brick kiln in her backyard. Following her death in 1990, her studio pottery passed to her daughter, and following the daughter’s death, to her granddaughter. This piece of glazed earthenware is part of a collection of 15 functional and decorative ceramic items donated by Viola’s granddaughter to the collection in 2024.A pair of handmade bookends, expertly potted and glazed. The style is representative of Australian ceramic design of the period, particularly that employed by Klytie Pate.Pair of hand moulded abstract ceramic wall sculptures with holes and marks of the original wires on the reverse. The front and back are glazed while the interior has been left unglazed. The free-form shapes resemble waves which were initially covered with a white glaze which was then overgrazed in a semi-transparent turquoise glaze. The two measures with circular bases include a pin cushion or receptacle for pins. ...These dressmaker hem measures were widely used universally from the mid-nineteenth century both commercially and domestically. They were used to enable the dressmaker to carefully measure and height of a hemline to ensure they were even. This implement became particularly important with changing fashions which saw the rising hemlines. The measure could also be used when completing home furnishing tasks check regular and even length of curtains. The Dean Tape Measure company was started by Edward Dean in 1850. He started working with his father who was a carpenter making builder's measures and then became a "measure maker". The company was taken over by Stanley in the 1980s. The production of Dean brand tape measures ceased in 1989.These items are significant because they were widely used for domestic and commercial use from the 1850s onwards.Three measures on varying size bases. Skittles was an indoor game which could be played by the whole family.This item reflects a time when simple games were enjoyed as a family. In rural areas where there was limited access to commercial recreation skittles would have been a popular pastime.Four wooden skittles. They are tapered with a knob at the top.
