This certificate was awarded to news photographer Denis Gibbons to mark his time on USS New Jersey BB62. Gibbons spent 5 years in Vietnam, and photographed the tours of nine Australian infantry battalions for Fairfax press and United Press International. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. A black and white photograph taken nn board the US Battleship USS New Jersey in the Tonkin Gulf, North Vietnam, Penny Plumber (Australia's Miss World) entertained sailors on board the battleship as part of the 25 Dec 68 USO Bob Hope Christmas Show. HMAS AustraliaHMAS Australia has been a significant link with and factor in the history of the Mission and staff. Padre Frank Oliver Chaplain from 1930-60 served on the ship in WW2. Cadets and officers also regularly visited the Mission.
