The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, 1920
Taken in 1920, depicted are four people in a rowing boat on Lake Sambell, Beechworth. From left to right, it is believed that the names of the people are Eric Beard, Mrs Doris Beard, and S/L to Bert Beard. The last two figures are unknown. Lake Sambell is a beautiful Victorian recreation lake and urban park with a unique history. It was created in the mid-1800s by the Rocky Mountain Mining company during the gold rush era and used as a mining site until the early 1900s, which brought Europeans into the area. It was turned into a reserve for residents in 1920 and is considered an icon of Beechworth as it represents the development of the community, human endeavour, and the spirit of the landscape. This photograph represents the community's social use of the lake in 1920.Black and white rectangular photograph print on paper.Reverse: LAKE SAMBELL/ c 1920/ from LTOR/ 1 ERIC? - BERT'S SON/ 2 MRS DORIS BEARD/ 3 S/L TO BERT BEARD/ 4 #beechworth, lake sambell, lake sambell boating, beechworth lake, social, 1920, victoria -

Photograph (black & white), Ballarat School of Mines Students visit the Last Chance Mine, c 1898
The mining class visited the Last Chance on the afternoon of Thursday, 8th June, under the guidance of Mr Kirby, the mine manager. Mr Campbell, the photographic instructor, also dared the perils of the deep in order to take some flashlight photos. As this was Mr Campbell's first visit below, several difficulties which he did not now existed prevented success. The students all ranged themselves in poetic and heroic attitudes for the first flashlight, but the development of the plate showed only the light from the candles and the moisture on the lens. The next two tries were better, but were under-exposed, and of no value, except as experience. Two gentlemen from England also went below with the students, but history repeated itself and Australia won the "test." The Englishmen left early. Mr Hart secured a fine specimen of arsenopyrite and indicator slate; also a bootlace, the property of a much-vexed miner, whose boots Mr Hart had borrowed. Horrors! Mr Hart steal a bootlace! Impossible! However, a tragedy was averted by the miner securing a new lace, and he was at once all smiles - so were the students. Mr Campbell took a photo of the students dressed for the occasion, and some were flattered, and some looked very like the universal "Weary Willie". (Ballarat School of Mines Students' Magazine, July 1899, p.2.)Over 24 men pose for a photograph outside the Last Chance mine. Some of the men are members of the visiting Ballarat School of Mines mining class. Thomas Hart (beard) stands at the back right. Certificate - Wodonga RSSILA Certificate of Appreciation, 1924
The Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia was formed in 1916 to support servicemen returning from World War 1. In 1940 its name was changed to Returned Sailors', Soldiers' and Airmen's Imperial League of Australia and again in 1966 to Returned Services League of Australia. Arthur Ernest Beard enlisted in the 10th Battalion in 1914 and was discharged as medically unfit in 1918. His service included three years and 115 days of overseas service. He was gassed during his war service, resulting in ongoing health issues. Beard received an incapacity pension. Despite his ill health, Arthur dedicated many years of service to the committee of the Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia Wodonga branch. At various times he served as President and secretary. He was on the committee when the branch was lobbying for the construction of a Soldiers' Memorial and also a Soldiers' Memorial Hall for Wodonga. Arthur also participated in groups and community activities, including the Wodonga Boys’ Club, Wodonga Public Library Committee and the Wodonga and District Progress Association. Arthur died on 29 Jun 1940 in Wodonga, Victoria, aged 46 years. This certificate is significant as it recognises service to the Wodonga Branch of the RSSILAA coloured certificate on heavy card presented by the Wodonga Branch of the Returned Sailor and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia. It features an archway imprinted with the name of the RSSIL with the League emblem surrounded by the flags of England, Australia and the Royal Australian Navy.
