Thomas Edward Williams was a native of Glamorganshire, South Wales, and came to Victoria in 1857, in the sailing ship Morning Light. He came to live in Bendigo in 1872. Mr Williams lived at 67 Vine Street, Bendigo. His obituary in the Bendigo Advertiser states that he was "the originator of the floral displays in the Easter Fair processions". The medal is possibly in recognition of his services for the Easter Fair.Heart shaped medal on a brown plaited leather strap with metal clasp fittings. The Victoria Quartz Gold Mine was situated on Victoria Hill, Ironbark, (1877 - 1913). At the turn of the century, this was the site of one of the premier mines on the Bendigo goldfield. In 1908, it boasted the world's deepest shaft - 4,478 feet (1,365 metres). The shaft reached a depth of 4,613 feet (1,406 metres) in 1910. In 1857 eight small claims in this area had been merged to form the Victoria Reef Quartz Mining Co. Another merger in 1877 led to the formation of the Victoria Quartz Co. For the next three decades, the mine produced consistent profits. In 1910, water burst into the claim, flooding the shaft and halting operations. The company baled water for six months then handed the mine over to the tributers who worked the upper levels for the share of the profits. The mine closed in 1913, having produced over 48,000 ounces of gold and paid dividends of £99,600. Gold was discovered on Victoria Hill in 1854, and by early 1855 claims had been taken up over its entire extent. Shafts were first worked by windlass, whip or whim, and primitive crushing batteries were in operation. By 1861, Victoria Hill had yielded at least 1,200,000oz in gold. One of the early claims on Victoria Hill was owned by Prussian immigrants, Christopher Ballerstedt and his son Theodore. In 1854, they bought a claim on the hill for £80, to which they subsequently added other claims, and from the quartz veins (called spurs), worked both by shafts and a large open cut, obtained gold worth nearly £200,000. Christopher Ballerstedt was dubbed 'Father of the Hill' and has been credited as the first to debunk the theory at that time prevalent on the Bendigo field, that the gold content of reefs would diminish at depth. As his shafts plunged below the 200-foot level, the quartz remained rich in gold. His success inspired others, and so led the way to Bendigo's later status as the world's deepest and richest goldfield. The Ballerstedt's built Bendigo's grandest mansion, Fortuna. Theodore continued to work Victoria Hill after his father's death, but in 1871, convinced that his claim was exhausted, he sold both mine and mansion to George Lansell for £60,000. Lansell's mine on Victoria Hill was called the 180, and operated under his ownership until his death in 1906. The mine supplied the initial wealth that made Lansell Bendigo's 'Quartz King'. George Lansell was such a force in Bendigo's mining history that his death was cited as one of the reasons for the decline of Bendigo as a quartz mining centre, The Victoria Hill Quartz Gold Mines are of historical, archaeological and scientific importance to the State of Victoria. The Victoria Hill Quartz Gold Mines are historically significant as the symbolic heart of Bendigo's famous goldfield. The mines are linked to nineteenth-century individuals (Christopher Ballerstedt and George Lansell) who played prominent roles in the evolution of Bendigo. Both men's fortunes and their influence on Bendigo, originated from mining operations carried out on the hill. The Victoria Hill Quartz Gold Mines are historically and scientifically important as characteristic examples of an important form of gold mining. Gold mining sites are of crucial importance for the pivotal role they have played since 1851 in the development of Victoria. As well as being a significant producer of Victoria's nineteenth century wealth, quartz mining, with its intensive reliance on machinery, played an important role in the development of Victorian manufacturing industry. The Victoria Hill Quartz Gold Mines are important as a manifestation of this aspect of gold mining. The Victoria Hill Quartz Gold Mines are scientifically important, as they contain relics span nearly sixty years of mining (1854 to 1913), documenting the richest and most significant years of Bendigo's world-famous quartz mining industry. Enhancing the significance of the place are relics from the Victoria Quartz Company operations, ncluding, at 4,870 feet, the world's deepest nineteenth-century gold mining shaft. As a postscript to the chronology of gold mining is the surviving crushing machinery (formerly part of the Bendigo Crushing Works) which was erected near the foundations of Lansell's 180 mine in 1932, to crush quartz for nearby mines. The place has a potential to yield artefacts and evidence which will be able to provide significant information about the technological history of gold mining. St LUKES ANGLICAN CHURCH BENDIGO In 1852, a party of Cornish miners, refusing to give up and having dug, by hand, down nearly 70 feet ‘got their reward. Suddenly, their picks sank into soft pipe-clay, white, satin-smooth and seemingly depthless. The men began tunnelling. Presently, the roof forming above them showered gold at their feet – the secret of Bendigo’s famous White Hills lay revealed.’ In the ‘wild rush’ that followed, when ‘the White Hills yielded enormously and some pretty piles were made’, a young Anglican priest, John Herbert Gregory, held the first Anglican church service at White Hills in 1853. The Hamlet of White Hills was surveyed and mapped in 1854 and, by 1863, St Luke’s Church in White Hills was opened on ‘an elevated site’ in a generously sized ‘church reserve’. St AUGUSTINE'S CHURCH MYERS FLAT Early diggers to this area were men named Myers and Nicholls, hence the name - Myers Flat and Myers Creek. 1857 saw the discovery of gold in the area and in less than one month 1000 ounces of gold per week resulted. The number of diggers in the Myers Creek or Burnt Gully totalled 4000 to 5000. Myers Creek consisted of several shops and buildings, two hotels, a race course and a lock-up built of logs. On November 6th, 1864, the opening of the new church of St Augustine' took place. The first mass was celebrated by the Reverand Dean Hayes, of St Killian's Sandhurst. The church of gothic design was built by a local contractor, and with bricks made from local clay. The church also has a fire place and is widely known as "The church with the Chimney. For many years it was also a Catholic school. St AUGUSTINE'S CHURCH INGLEWOOD The church features an Early English design from 1864 and Decorated Gothic extensions from 1884.Notable elements include the sanctuary with the Catto Memorial window and interior cusped arcading of the wainscot. Architectural attribution is given to Vahland and Getzschmann for one or both sections. St JOHNS CHURCH (PRESBYTERIAN) BENDIGO The church's architect was W C Vahland VIA, and the builder was N Langstaff. It was built in April 1890, and opened in Feb 1891. The tender price was 2,481 pounds. The church style was gothic, built by the Congregational Church to replace an earlier building built in 1858. St Johns bought the church in 1949 and made additions in 1951. THE SACRED HEART CATHEDRAL BENDIGO Originally designed in 1895 by Reed, Smart and Tappin of Melbourne, the first stage opened in September 1901; the second stage began in January 1954 and was expected to finish in late 1976. Skilled stonemasons were brought from overseas for the completion. The Exterior built from Geelong sandstone and Harcourt granite, matching the original materials for color consistency. The cathedral is designed in the early English Gothic style. It Features a tower and spire weighing several thousand tons, with the spire rising 282 ft. from the floor and topped by a 10 ft. cross.Interior. The original stained glass window, made in Birmingham, England, is above the main entrance on the west side. Marble for the floor was imported from Vincenzo and Via Reggio, Italy; Sicilian Pearl marble is used in the four chapels. Ceilings in the chapels feature Western red cedar and yellow pine timbers.The transept includes Australian blackwood paneling and 12 carved shields representing the apostles. The internal height from floor to ceiling is 80 ft.Artistic Elements. Two large tapestries, specially designed and crafted by Mrs. Carrington, hang in the sanctuary as a symbolic link to Bendigo. ST PAULS BENDIGO The nave was built in 1868 and the tower in 1873. The nave is notable for unusual ceiling with metal and timber overlay members. The tower notable for early brick and bold Gothic influenced design. The church was opened on 12th Nov 1868 and a new chancel sanctuary and Transepts were added on 22 Oct 1927. The architect was Robert A Love. CONGREGATIONAL CHURCHES IN BENDIGO Three main Congregational church buildings existed in Bendigo: at the corner of Forest and Mackenzie Streets (the original site), on Quarry Hill (corner of Russell and Gladstone Streets), and on Calvin Street (later the Lutheran Church). The Calvin Street church was named in honor of John Calvin, a notable figure who lived in the area. In June 1858, 1.5 acres of land were purchased at the Forest and Mackenzie Streets corner for £1200.The first church was built on this site in November 1858 and later enlarged in May 1867 to seat 500 people. A prefabricated parsonage stood nearby until about 1920, serving as a caretaker's cottage for several years. In 1890, foundation stones for a new church designed by W.C. Vahland were laid, featuring a tall tower and two gable crossings (reduced from three to save costs). The new church opened on February 26, 1890, costing £2483. The contractor was N. Longstaff. Some architectural elements, such as the chancel, were added later when St. John's Presbyterian took over the building. Congregational attendance declined, leading to the purchase and alteration of a brick school complex in Olinda Street to serve as their headquarters.The timber church on Russell Street and the Calvin Street property were sold.The valuable Forest Street property was eventually sold to a London sect and later became an investment for the Methodist Church.Historical information on seven denominational churches in Bendigo and Inglewood. The letter is addressed to Bishop Bernard Stewart, with copies sent to Father Louis McDonnell (Eaglehawk), A. J. Watts (Town Clerk, Bendigo), and Mrs. R. R. Doble, Registrar of the Bendigo Church of England Diocese, dated March 20, 1973. St. Augustine's Church of England in Inglewood has been officially placed on the National Trust's Classified List. This classification recognizes the church as essential to Australia's heritage and emphasizes its preservation. The church features an Early English design from 1864 and Decorated Gothic extensions from 1884.Notable elements include the sanctuary with the Catto Memorial window and interior cusped arcading of the wainscot. Thomas Ham was a cartographer, engraver, lithographer and publisher in Victoria and Queensland. He compiled and printed several editions of his squatting map, beginning with A map of Australia Felix in 1847 and changing its title to Ham's squatting map of Victoria in 1851. The 1851 edition was accompanied by a key listing the names of all the squatters within squatting districts and counties. Later editions show the existing counties, but some areas of Gippsland and the Australian Alps are still described as 'unsurveyed country'. Captain Mackenzie Luckie was born in 1821. From 1853 he commanded eight ships. He died on board the Michael Angelo off the coast of New Zealand in February 1875. After the ship arrived in Nelson, The Argus (Melbourne) reported on 12 February 1875 that Captain Luckie was found dead in his cabin, from heart disease. His appointed Attorney Mr George William Knight selected land in Sunbury in 1860 and then arrived in Bendigo on 2 April 1870. Anna Luffsmann Mueller was the wife of Ernst. He was a sharebroker and mining investor who was born in 1832 and died in 1910.They had a child Ernst George Mueller. This bronze bust in Rosiland Park recognises the importance of Ernst to the Bendigo area, it was created by Mr. James White. Wooden box with plaque on the top ''In Memoriam''. Inside a large ornate black leather bound book with metal plaque. On the first page a black and white oval photo of Ernst Mueller. The photo is surrounded by flowers. Next page a dedication to Mrs. Anna B.F Mueller Lancewood House, McLaren Street, Bendigo, with an eulogy from the representatives of the various companies in which Mr. Mueller was involved, date at the bottom September 1910. The following three pages are full of cards from mining company with signatures of directors and managers. The inscription reads "Mrs Anne Mueller – Lancewood House, McClaren Street, Bendigo. Dear Madam, the bereavement you have sustained by the death of you husband, Mr Ernst Mueller has evoked the heartfelt sympathy of all classes of this community for you and your family and we who have had the pleasure of a close and intimate acquaintance with him, desire to specially express and emphasize the esteem we entertained for him and to console with you in your irreparable loss. For fifty years the late Mr Mueller was a prominent figure in the city and through all its vicissitudes and fluctuations during that period he evinced unswerving faith in the soundness of the Bendigo District and its mining resources, and his faith was demonstrated not by words merely but by steadfast and liberal support. The progress of the great mining industry of Bendigo has been due largely to his enterprise and his name will ever be linked with that of the late Mr George Lansell as one of the most prominent pioneers in proving the stability of this field. His close and unremitting attention to this companies represented in this address has been of great advantage to the shareholders whose interests he studied and conserved guarding them as his own and his name will ever by a synonym for just and honourable dealing while his kindly nature, unwavering courtesy and unostentatious charity stamped his as a true gentleman. Although his modest and unobtrusive nature caused his to refrain from occupying any public position, his memory is enshrined in the hearts of all Bendigonians. To you the loss is greatest, but we trust that Gold will sustain and strengthen you and that supported by the love of your children who we hope to see follow the example of their honoured site you will enjoy many years of happiness among the people who have learned to love and esteem you as well as you late dear partner now called to rest. Gold was discovered on Victoria Hill in 1854 and by 1861, 1,200,000 ounces of gold had been extracted from the site. The first claim was bought for 80 pounds by Prussian immigrant Christopher Ballerstedt and his son Theodore. Christopher Ballerstedt was nicknamed the "Father of the Hill" and was the first to prove that gold reefs extended below the surface. His 200-foot plus mine shafts yielded quartz rich with gold, inspired other miners, and were instrumental in Bendigo becoming the world's deepest and richest goldfield. The site still features relics of nineteenth century mining including quartz crushing machinery and the foundations of George Lansell’s 180 mine. These features are characteristic of Bendigo’s mining history and represent two prominent nineteenth century miners, Christopher Ballerstedt and George Lansell, who held important roles in the development of Bendigo. Victoria Hill Quartz Gold Mines are registered as a site of significance. The site is of historical, archaeological and scientific importance to Victoria. The mines represent the symbolic heart of Bendigo’s gold mining history and the importance that mining played in wealth creation and the development of Victoria. The diggings reserve is accessed from the rear of Albert Richardson Reserve located at 40-56 Marong Road, Ironbark. The site has steep and unformed paths and is closed to the public at dusk. It is important to stay to the paths to avoid the diggings. Interpretive signs help visitors to appreciate the importance of the site and the remaining relics of Bendigo’s mining history.Victoria Hill Ironbark, Bendigo.
