Organisations such as 'Friendly Societies' were set up to protect and care for their members and communities at a time when there was no welfare state or National Health Service. The aim was and still is, to provide help to members and communities when they need it. The friendly societies are non-profit mutual organisations owned by their members. All income is passed back to the members in the form of services and benefits. The Oddfellows are also fundraisers for local and national charities; lodges raise money for local causes, and the society as a whole raise significant amounts for charities. The first meeting of the 1st Bendigo Guides was held by Miss Merle Bush on the 22nd of August 1922 in the St Paul's School Room. Twelve girls were present. In the year 2000 the Club became Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch Inc. Peter was a Bendigo RSL delegate on the Co Operative Society for the years 1998 - 2000. He was a Committee Member Bendigo RSL & Bendigo District RSL from 1996 - 2010, 2012 - 2015, Jnr Vice President 1998 - 2002, Snr Vice 2003 - 2008.
