The Bendigo Legacy Club was formed in 1926 with members being returned soldiers. Legacy aimed to assist the widows and children of servicemen who had died during World War 1. In the years of Allan Doney’s photography, landmark buildings succumbed to fire, neglect and redevelopment. He photographed the grey sand hills from Bendigo’s mining past, the streetscapes, poppet heads, miners’ cottages, gracious homes with ornate verandahs, trams and much more. Above all, his photographs show how much of the city has survived from the 19th century – and how much has not. Through two decades of great change, Allan Doney was there to capture ways people interacted with it. Although he travelled to many other places in Northern Victoria and beyond in search of subjects for his art, he seemed to always return to Bendigo for inspiration.

These Constitutions dated 14.11.1952 with the name's , "A.V. Palmer - President" (Bendigo RSL) "N.D. Wilson - President - Vic Branch R.S.S.A.I.L.A". The small booklets were headed "Rules of the Bendigo Returned Servicemen's Club - 1956" As far back as 1950 there was discussion within the Sub Branch re a Club in suitable premises. A property was purchased being 11 McKenzie Street Bendigo with the title dated 9.2.1951, the facility opened on 1.6.1951 but without a Liqueur Licence. Years followed with a failure to be granted one. Finally the facility was sold to Bendigo Legacy and they occupied the building on 7.6.1959 which became known as "Legacy House". George Victor Lansell was Born in London in 1883, eldest son of George Lansell ('Quartz King') and Edith. Educated at St Andrew's College, Bendigo, and Melbourne Grammar. Married Edith, a skiing champion, in 1910; honeymooned overseas and visited Egypt. Named his Bendigo home 'Denderah' after an Egyptian archaeological site. The house featured art nouveau architecture and a Widow's Walk for astronomy. Commissioned in the 8th Australian Infantry Regiment in 1904; captain by 1909. He served in France during World War I with the 38th Battalion; wounded but returned to service. George organized the northwest Victorian Volunteer Defence Corps in WWII; retired as honorary colonel in 1942. Served as a Nationalist Party member for Bendigo in the Legislative Council, later joined the Country Party.President of the Bendigo branch of the Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia for nearly 30 years. Led fundraising for the Soldiers' Memorial Hall and its brass honour rolls. Director of several local companies, including Sandhurst Trustees Co. and Bendigo Mutual Permanent Land and Building Society. Introduced Hanro Knitting Mills and the Australian Swiss Watch Co. to Bendigo.Acquired and merged the Bendigo Independent with The Bendigo Advertiser. Built a clinic at Bendigo Hospital with his mother; donated medical equipment and supported local institutions like the Benevolent Home, art gallery, School of Mines, and YMCA.Recognition and Legacy. A 94 page cookbook compiled by Legacy in the 2018. In the acknowledgments special mention was made of the Bendigo, Canberra and Melbourne Legacy Clubs and to the legatees that contributed recipes. Some of the recipes also appear to come from widows in tribute to their husbands' favourite recipes. The publication was supported by Thales who had been in partnership with Legacy since 2008. Copies were sold for $20 each. The book is dedicated to the men, women and families of the Australian Defence Force. Ray Beer was an employee of the Central Deborah Gold Mine. February 15th 2009: Bendigo Advertiser: 'MINING stalwart Raymond Beer has died at the age of 74 after a battle with cancer. He leaves behind an extended family and a legacy in Bendigo’s mining history. Ray was mine manager at the Central Deborah Gold Mine - appointed in 1978 - and led the team that made possible the underground project at the second level. He had a vision to allow visitors to go underground and experience Bendigo’s mining heritage first hand. Ray was responsible for developing the new battery, shaft and poppet head to make this a reality. It took persistence and lots of hard work. Friend and work colleague Bill McNamara said Ray was as good as 10 men. His enthusiasm and work ethic were unprecedented. Ray will be sadly missed by his wife, Thelma, six children, 15 grandchildren, seven brothers, three sisters, his extended family, and friends. He will be remembered for his kindness, tenacity and strength of character. Central Deborah Gold Mine history: At its peak, Central Deborah Gold Mine reached a depth of 412 metres. It has 17 separate levels and 15 kilometres of drives and cross cuts (tunnels). The Central Deborah was very much a hands-on mine and the conditions that the miners worked in would be considered shocking by today's standards – being lowered underground in a cage with only two sides, often working ankle to knee deep in water, filling up to 32 ore trucks a shift by hand which were then pushed a mile or more along rails in the drives, working by carbide lamp, breathing in the fumes and rock dust and communication by bells. Geez, they were ironmen. However, at the time working conditions were considered to be among the best on the goldfields at Central Deborah, after all it was one of the only mines that had hot showers. Following Central Deborah Gold Mine's closure, the Bendigo skyline began to noticeably change. Obvious remnants of mining such as poppet heads, engine rooms, service quarters, battery houses and chimneys were steadily disappearing. After intense lobbying by the local community, the Bendigo City Council purchased the still very much intact Central Deborah Gold Mine in 1970 for a mere $6,000 to ensure that a vital link to Bendigo's historic golden past was maintained. The Bendigo Trust was then formed to oversee the operations of the Central Deborah Gold Mine, which led to the surface of the mine being opened to the public in 1971. Initially the surface was open for just 12 hours a week and as the demand for viewing a part of Bendigo's history increased, so did the opening hours. In 1974 the mine was gazetted as a Public Historical Purposes Reserve and attracted such visitors as H.R.H Prince Charles. By far the greatest shortcoming at this stage was that no one could view the underground workings, as these had become flooded. After what could only be described as a monumental effort by everyone involved, Level 2 of the mine was officially opened to the public by the Premier of Victoria, the Honourable John Cain, on 20 June 1986, which brought to fruition a long standing dream.Black and white photograph. This document examines the controversial legacy of Dr. James Patrick Murray, focusing on his involvement in maritime violence and his surprising recognition by the Bendigo Council. Bendigo Council awarded Dr. Murray a bonus and a glowing reference 150 years ago, despite his alleged involvement in mass murder at sea. He received a £50 bonus (over $10,000 today) for his work during a public health crisis. Murray captained the brig Carl, which was involved in forcibly transporting islanders to work on Fiji's cotton plantations. Accounts describe extreme violence: when enslaved islanders resisted, Murray and his crew fired into the hold, drilled holes to shoot more easily, and disposed of bodies at sea—allegedly killing 70 people. Survivors were delivered to Fiji, and the crew received a large finder's fee. Murray was described as charming and confident, but also as cruel, treacherous, and deceitful by contemporary sources. He betrayed his own crew by testifying against them in exchange for immunity from prosecution. Some accounts of Murray's actions may be exaggerated or self-serving, as witnesses were also implicated in the crimes and may have sought to minimize their own roles. Murray was Irish-born, educated at Trinity College Dublin, and established as a Melbourne doctor before turning to risky ventures in the South Seas, drawn by the promise of wealth and adventure. The South Pacific at the time attracted many fugitives and outcasts seeking fortune or escape from the law. Despite his violent past, Murray returned to Victoria and maintained a respectable public image, with few aware of his connection to the notorious events in Fiji. In 1872, Bendigo faced a deadly smallpox outbreak.Dr. Murray was appointed with full authority to manage the crisis and was credited with successfully containing the outbreak, earning public gratitude and official praise. Shortly after his public health success, Murray was implicated in the slave trading of South Sea islanders, specifically through his involvement with the ship Carl. Court testimony revealed brutal methods used to capture islanders, including trickery and force. The scandal shocked the public, with widespread condemnation and questions about how Murray had been appointed to a position of trust. Victorian authorities and the press criticized Murray and those who had supported or employed him. Despite the revelations, the Bendigo council felt obligated to honor their promise of a bonus for his work during the outbreak, citing the importance of keeping their word. Murray did not return to Bendigo after the scandal broke, though he sent letters expressing gratitude and claiming to have reformed. His claims of redemption were met with skepticism and derision by the press. The ship Carl was seized, and several crew members were convicted and sentenced for their roles in the slave trading operation. The Legacy of Richard Hartley Smith, a pioneer retailer of Upper Pall Mall Bendigo, 44 pages with black and white photographs, the story of other pioneer retailers and developers who began their businesses and property investments with such energy and enthusiasm, leaving us some of the buildings that still face Pall Mall today. Fortuna is a historically significant mansion in Bendigo, once home to the Lansell family from 1871 to 1935. George Lansell, Wendy's ancestor, was a prominent goldmine owner known as "the quartz king of Bendigo. Wendy Caldwell, aged 50 and a business owner in Melbourne, was inspired by her visit to Fortuna to organize a major family reunion. She planned and brought together 250 relatives for the event. Architect of Fortuna Villa Carl William Vahland was born in 1828 in Nienburg an der Weser, Germany. He trained at the prestigious Polytechnic Baugewerkschule in Holzminden, excelling in building and architecture. Emigrated to Melbourne in 1854, motivated by political unrest in Germany and the lure of the goldfields. Quickly he moved to Bendigo, joining other German migrants who contributed significantly to the region. Early Initially worked as a carpenter, then established himself as an architect in Bendigo by 1856. He Formed partnerships with other German architects, notably Robert Getzschmann and later his son Henry.Major. He Designed many of Bendigo’s most prominent buildings, including the Town Hall, Shamrock Hotel, Bendigo Hospital, Benevolent Asylum, School of Mines, Mechanics Institute, Princess Theatre, Masonic Temple, Alexandra Fountain, and several banks and churches. His firm also worked in other Victorian towns and opened an office in Echuca. Favored French Renaissance and Hellenistic Greek styles, influenced by German architectural trends. He Married Jane Barrow in 1859; they had ten children, though three died young. Became a naturalized Australian and anglicized his name to William Vahland. He Owned and developed the Charterhouse estate and vineyard at Runnymede, exporting award-winning wine to Europe. Justice of the Peace for over 40 years, city councillor, and mayor of Bendigo. Mr Ellis was highly regarded as a collector and preserver of traditional bush music, with his collection of dance related material the largest in the National Library Archives in Canberra. He was award an Order of Australia Medal in 2012 for services to the arts through the collection and preservation of Australian folk history and heritage. Mr Ellis was a founding member of the Emu Creek Bush Band and achieved two platinum and several gold records in his more than 30 years with the Wedderburn Old Timers Band. Fellow Emu Creek Bush Band member and close friend John Williams said Mr Ellis had made an invaluable contribution to the preservation of Australia's musical and dance heritage, travelling extensively across the country recording and notating folk music. 'In 500 year's time, as long as they can find the technology, people will be able to resurrect our bush dancing history,' he said. 'Probably his biggest legacy is the number of young people who have been made aware of bush music and are continuing to play it today and will play it in the future.' As a life member of the Bendigo Field Naturalists Mr Ellis was also involved in campaigns to establish the Whipstick and Kamarooka State Parks and the Saloman's Gully and Jackass Flat Flora Reserves, and lobbied for the inclusion of One Tree Hill in the Greater Bendigo National Park. A public funeral service will beheld at the Mulqueen Family Chapel on Bridge Street on Monday, May 25, at 11am, followed by a private cremation.
