It was a 30 year project for the writer, Adam Clarke. He was the great uncle of Daniel Clarke, a 19th century resident of Warrnambool. Daniel Clarke, as a social worker for the Anglican Church, established the Framlingham Aboriginal Reserve in the 1860s. For thirty years he was a prominent businessman in Warrnambool as a photographer and artist. He is well-known today for his paintings of Tower Hill and the Hopkins River mouth. This book is retained not only because of its antiquarian value but also because of its link with Daniel Clarke, important in Warrnambool’s 19th century history. This is a hard cover book with a black leather spine and black leather trimming on the cover edges. The cover is green with gold lettering and ornamentation on the spine. The pages have a mottled blue and brown pattern on the edges. The cover is a little torn and stained. adam clarke, daniel clarke, bible commentary -

This volume moves from Job’s suffering and vindication through the Psalms’ worship and lament, into Proverbs’ moral instruction, Ecclesiastes’ reflections on life’s vanity and Song of Solomon’s love poetry. In Henry’s arrangement, it is the part of the Old Testament devoted to reflection, praise, instruction and spiritual experience. That makes it very different in tone from Volume 2, which is mainly narrative history. It should be noted that in the nine-volume edition, Volume 3 is the section from Job to Song of Solomon. Some catalogues and later printings group Henry’s work differently, so the exact volume label can vary, but this volume’s content remains the same in the standard nine-volume arrangement. An Exposition of The Old and New Testament Vol 3 Author: Matthew Henry Publisher: Bell and Bradfute, Dickson and M'Cleish Date: 1790 Further Information: Badly worn brown hardcover and spine. The BFBS had a strict constitutional rule during this era that they would only distribute English Bibles "without note or comment" to avoid sectarian bias, and they exclusively used the King James Version for English readers at this time (the English Revised Version wasn't published until 1881–1885).
