The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. Nowlan's Library was in the billiards saloon in Nicholson street Orbost and was owned by Lionel H. Nowlan. The joining fee was 1/- and the cost of borrowing was 3d per book. This book has been written by Vanda Savill and is about the settlers in the Wallacedale area in Western Victoria. Wallacedale is 28 kilometres south west of Hamilton and was created by the draining of the Condah Swamp. Vanda Savill (1913-2005) and her husband ran a dairy farm and the Bower Birds Nest Museum and History Centre at Heywood. Vanda Savill was passionate about keeping alive the personal histories of local people and for 20 years she wrote and published many books about the areas in which she lived. This book is of interest because it tells the stories of settlers in the Wallacedale area of Western Victoria. This booklet gives information on the settlement of Dergholm at the time of the centenary of its founding, 1973. The origin of the name Dergholm is unclear but it may have Irish connections. Europeans came to the area in the 1840s and 50s but it was not until the 1870s that the town was surveyed. Dergholm is in the far west of Victoria 334 kilometres from Melbourne and nearby is Dergholm State Park established in 1982. The booklet was produced for the Centenary Back to Dergholm Committee and the local centenary celebrations. This book is of some interest as it provides information on Dergholm, a settlement in the far west of Western Victoria. This is a soft cover booklet of 52 pages by Alistair Roper. It has a cream-coloured cover with a black and white photograph of early Dergholm on the front cover (Edward Quinn’s house). The booklet has printed material - a President’s Message, an Author’s Note, Acknowledgements, Contents, information on the Dergholm area, including a list of local birds, and References. This book was written by Edward Vidler (1863-1942), a printer, publisher and author. Born in England, Vidler was in Geelong in the 1880s and produced there a commemorative volume on that city. He came to Warrnambool in the early years of the 20th century and was Secretary of the Warrnambool and District Progress League and the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Industry. While in Warrnambool he produced an important 1907 publication, ‘Warrnambool Past and Present – Sixty Years of Progress’ and also organized the production of the Pioneer Honour Board featuring portraits of 204 Warrnambool and district pioneer men. After he left Warrnambool he lived in Melbourne where he edited magazines and published his own and other writings. He was a foundation member of the group that established the Maranoa Native Gardens in Balwyn and promoted Australian flora and fauna. This book is of great interest as it was written by Edward Vidler, a resident of Warrnambool in the early 1900s and an important and influential figure in our history. He left behind in Warrnambool two most important legacies – the Pioneer Honour Board and the book ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’, a history of Warrnambool that has proved invaluable to researchers today. No information has been found on the original owner of the book, William Ewers. This is a 1931 soft cover book of 96 pages. The cover has a grey-coloured background and a sepia-coloured photograph of two kookaburras on a tree branch on the front cover and an advertisement for a publication called ‘Songs of the Bush’ on the back cover. The book is dedicated to the Gould League of Bird Lovers. It has a Contents page, a Foreword, a Preface, pages on Australian birds and an Index. This book was a prize given by the Warrnambool Baptist Sunday School to Richard Petterd in 1888. The Warrnambool Baptist Church was established in 1864 in a small cottage in Kinross Avenue in Warrnambool at the home of Mr and Mrs Andrew Griffiths. In 1869 a church was built in Koroit Street and enlarged in 1974. From time to time more improvements were made and the church still operates from the same site today. A Sunday School was established in 1865. Richard Forrester Petterd, born in 1878 in Warrnambool, was the son of George Petterd and Mary Ann Petterd, nee Warn. He married Susanna McConnell in 1903 and died in 1935. A daughter, Muriel, married Frederick Wooles in 1933 and it was their son, Kenneth from whose estate this book has come to be added to the Society’s collection.This book is most significant as it is a rare memento from the early days of the Warrnambool Baptist Sunday School and it belonged to Richard Petterd whose family was involved in businesses in Warrnambool as picture framers, stationery and fancy goods shop proprietors and estate commission agents. The book is a very attractive example of Victorian-era children’s books. This is a hard cover book of 80 pages It has a multi-coloured front cover depicting three children reading a book with a window behind them and floral decorations and two birds surrounding the three girls. The red binding is somewhat torn. The back cover has black and white etchings of flowers and children and advertisements for other books available. A collection of 20 photographs which shows different aspects of Warrnambool. In 1896 Joseph Jordan was given exclusive rights to produce a souvenir booklet for the 1896-97 Warrnambool Industrial and Arts Exhibition. The Jordan studio sold many publications such as albums, which featured local scenes, as well as postcards, and greeting cards for different occasions and portraits The Jordan studio was a significant photographic studio in Warrnambool. They produced a large volume of work which is a useful record of scenes of the Western District and Warrnambool. This Souvenir booklet was a memento of an important event in Warrnambool. This booklet was the first of a series of scientific and historical studies of Gippsland to be published by the Bairnsdale Advertiser. The author, Eric Charles Frederick Bird was Principal Fellow, Department of Geography, University of Melbourne, Australia. The Mitchell River silt jetties are an unusually long, thin landform located in the Gippsland Lakes region. They have been formed over millions of years by sediment deposition from the Mitchell River during periods of low water flow and subsequent wash-through during periods of high water flow. The long narrow banks of silt extend more than eight kilometres east into Lake King. This item is a useful reference for the silt jetties of the Mitchell River.A 32 pp book with alight green cover.
