Invented in 1880 by John Blakey in England, the iconic Blakey's Segs brand has been used for over a century on work boots, brogues, and military parade boots, and can still be purchased online. These protective pieces of metal were hammered into the sole of shoes to save wear on the leather. They came in a range of shapes and sizes. Although now manufactured by H. Goodwin (Castings) Ltd, they still bear the Blakey name. The lower part of the segments were nails which allowed them to be attached to the sole. Whilst they were robust and extended the life of the shoe, they were not without their disadvantages. They created noisy footsteps on some surfaces and sometimes caused the foot to slip forward on smooth surfaces such as smooth concrete paving slabs. Many adolescents enjoyed have segs on their shoes as struck on the asphalt at the right angle, they could send off sparks. These items are significant because they were widely used to preserve leather footwear throughout Australia and overseas when items were less dispensible.Small pieces of metal inscribed with the word "BLAKEY".
