The gaiters, buttoned up the side, cover the leg from the ankle to a point just below the knee. This was appropriate in the time when clergy's travelling would be on horseback but continued into the middle of the 20th century.Pair of black wool with tape binding and 11 fabric covered buttons. This gown was the winning entry in the Mannequins and Models Guild's Gown of the Year competition, held at the Chevron Hilton Hotel, Melbourne in November 1963 in aid of the Torch Bearers for Legacy. Designed by Lorna White for Hartnell of Melbourne and modelled by Marien Brindley, the dress’s construction is reputed to have consumed 300 hours, with the finished dress weighing 6 kilograms and costing around 3000 pounds. Margaret Law (nee Bartholomew) was born on 3 December 1837 in Stirling, Scotland. She emigrated to Australia with her family aboard the Ticonderoga, arriving in Melbourne on 22 December 1852. Around one hundred passengers died of typhus during the journey, and around seventy more after arrival. Two of Margaret's siblings were among the casualties. The Bartholomew family settled in Ballarat. Around 1861, Margaret married James Nicol Law in Ballarat. They had several children, the youngest of which was James Lindsay Gordon "Lin" Law, (1881-1963). James Nicol Law was killed in a train accident in Fingal Tasmania in July 1886. Lin Law married Elsie Russell on 12 January 1915 (BHS also holds a bridge jacket given to Elsie by Lin; see T0047). They settled in Brighton, moving into 'Blairgowrie', 306 St Kilda Street, in 1920. The eldest their four children, Pauline Margaret Law (born 15 December 1915) ultimately purchased the house with her husband Hugh McLean in 1956 and lived there until 1965 when the house was demolished. In 1906, Lin and his business partner James Kerr Pearson (also a Brighton local, who lived at 12 Moule Avenue) established the shirt manufacturing company Pelaco. In 1922 the company established its factory at 23 Goodwood Street on the top of Richmond Hill; the 4.3 metre high neon 'Pelaco' sign, erected in 1939, is today heritage listed. The company was known for its innovative approach to efficiency and labour relations, discontinuing Saturday morning work in 1908 and appointing an industrial relations officer in 1928.An orange pink (salmon) with cream spot, very fine silk organza dress from circa 1840. The dress features a wide scooped neckline, almost to the shoulder. The sleeves are set low with a gathered head to the sleeve and finished with a flounce, dropping to just above the elbow. The bodice is shaped and fitted to the body and features a centre front detail of the bodice fabric that is gathered, ruched and tapers in a v to the waist. The waistline of the dress sits on the true waist at the sides and tapers to a v at the centre front and centre back. The full skirt is gathered to the piped waistline and falls to the floor. The skirt features three horizontal pleats in the skirt fabric in between four bands of cream floral self embroidered detail. The dress is open at the back where it is boned and features lacing holes. The lacing is missing from the item. This jacket would have been worn with a long black skirt by an elderly woman or by one in mourning, probably in early Edwardian times.This item is retained for display purposes.This is lady's black satin top with long sleeves. There are hooks and eyes for the full length of the front. with a fitted, boned waist. It has panels on each side of the opening on the front with black embroidered " frog" decorations. The sleeves are pleated with three bands of black velvet on the cuffs at the wrist. The garment is lined with black cloth. This bodice belonged to Mary Crombie, an early Victorian dentist, who lived in Brighton while she was studying at the Australian College of Dentistry in the mid-1900s, and later returned to the area in her retirement from 1949-1971. Mary Margaret Crombie (1884-1971) was born at Coan Downs Station near Walgett, northern New South Wales, where her father Henry was station manager. After Henry’s untimely death in 1895, Mary and her mother loved for a few years with family members in St Kilda, before moving into a cottage of their own, ‘Rosewood’, at 42 Asling Street, Brighton around 1899. From here, Mary attended Oberwyl Ladies College in St Kilda and later the Australian College of Dentistry, one of only a few women to study dental surgery at the time. She was apprenticed to Ada Tovell (1865-1932), one of Victoria’s first female dentists, who had her own practice in Collins Street. Mary graduated in 1907 and the following year moved with he mother to Yarram in South Gippsland, where she took over the running of a practice owned by Sale dentist Charles Trood, eventually purchasing it from him in 1915. Speaking to a Brighton newspaper in 1961, Mary said she believed that she was the first woman to start a dental practice in Gippsland. For some locals, this took a little getting used to: “Many were amazed, and had some misgivings, when they found that the local dentist was a woman,” she said. “I always remember a huge farmer (he was about 6 ft. 4 in.), who had fortified himself at the local hotel to face the ordeal of visiting the dentist. He almost turned and ran when he saw me. … He was still more amazed when I pulled out his tooth without undue trouble.” The farmer was the best advertisement she could have asked for, telling everybody about the diminutive lady dentist who had calmly extracted his tooth. Mary practiced in Yarram until her retirement in 1949. After selling her practice she returned to Brighton, where she spent the last two decades of her life residing at 25 Oak Grove. Following her death in 1971, her relatives in Brighton donated a number of items from her home to BHS.Black satin bodice, boned, with black faceted glass buttons down the front. High collar. Both collar and cuffs are edged with a black net ruffle. Two rows of seven black crochet-covered buttons at each cuff, fastening with loops. This bodice, which originally had a matching skirt, belonged to Phoebe Richardson (nee Brinsmead, 1885-1956), who married Charles William Richardson in 1911. The family lived in Geelong. Brinsmead Lane, off the Bellarine Highway in Leopold, is named after Phoebe's family, being the original location of the family home. The bodice was likely made by a seamstress as the family were quite fashion-conscious. Phoebe's daughter Edna Baker (nee Richardson, b. 1914) wore this bodice as a dress-up as a child. She donated it BHS in the 1980s and provided additional information on it when visiting the Society in 2004.Khaki green silk bodice, boned around waist. Clothing. Silver grey long silk skirt with train. Front of skirt finished with a pleated decorative band. Skirt V shaped panels, as seen on the bodice. V shapes on front, edged with the silvery satin as seen on the sleeves of the bocice. Front and back of skirt are decorated with three flat bows of silk fabric, grey grosgrain ribbon, and gold lurex knitted fabric. This dress is a 'Dolly Varden' or 'shepherdess" style costume worn by Ida Annie Wallace (1890-1976) on a sea voyage to China accompanying her parents in 1911. The BHS has a photo of Ida wearing this dress when she was a guest at a dance for young people given by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne (possibly T. J. Davey). This party may have been held on the ship or it may have been a seperate event. This style dress was a popular choice for fancy dress in the late 1890s and early 1900s. The style is named after the character Dolly Varden in Charles Dickens, 'Barnaby Rudge' 1841. Around 1872, Dolly Varden-inspired costumes and paraphernalia were very a popular craze. Family information states that the silk for this dress was purchased by Ida and Marjorie's grandfather's sister (great aunt) in England circa 1840. The dress was donated by Marjorie Wallace (1901-1999), Ida's sister. Marjorie did not accompany the family to China, but stayed home with a governess. Marjorie lived in Brighton between 1923 and circa 1950 and attended Firbank Church of England Girls Grammar School.A dress consisting of bodice (.1) and skirt (.2). The bodice is made from beige silk with sprays of red and blue flowers and originally laced down the centre front with pink ribbon. The lower part of the bodice is modelled on a late 18th century polonaise design. The bodice is boned and features waist tapes. The elbow length sleeves are finished with beige hand made Maltese lace featuring Maltese crosses. The mid calf length skirt is made from pale pink silk which has been quilted and lined to create a stiffened form. Clothing. Women's black embossed silk bodice. Part of two piece set (skirt 11410.2). Stand up lace collar (7 cm) boned on either side and edged with cream coloured lace. Collar fastened at centre back with three metal hooks and eyes. Front opening left of centre fastened with eight metal hooks and cotton loops and three across the left shoulder. Crossover section at front is pin tucked below the neckline and is tapered into the waist with centre pleats. Both sides of the crossover have decorative beading along the edges. The inner layer of the bodice is fastened at centre front with 15 metal hooks and eyes - alternating directions. The bodice is shaped from the waist with 9 boned casings. The back is shaped in at the waist finishing with two U shaped tails (11cm X 8cm) with V shaped tails (4 cm X 6cm) on either side. The waistline and tails are finished with a double row of decorative black beading. At the waistline at centre back are three metal hooks to attach bodice to skirt. Long sleeves are gathered at the shoulder, shaped at the elbow tapering to the wrist. Below the wrist is a two piece cuff (13cm X 7cm) with decorative black beading. The bodice is fully lined with light brown cotton fabric with grey splash pattern. Historical Notes: This bodice and skirt belonged to Elizabeth Graydon (nee Richardson). Clothing. Women's black silk calf length skirt. Skirt has silk lining with a layer of silk fabric stitched to cover lower section of lining (52 cm). An outer layer of silk fabric falls from the waist to overlap the underlayer. The top layer has an irregular curved hem line.The inside waistband of ribbed cotton fabric (7cm) has six boned casings. The centre back opening (28 cm) overlaps at the waistband and is fastened with metal hooks and eyes and press-studs. The silk lining opening is fastened with four metal press-studs. Ladies black boned bodice of brocade fabric with floral pattern. Crossover front opening with internal centre fastened with thirteen metal hooks and eyes.Crossover section fastened on LHS with seven metal hooks and eyes covered by overlapping panel. Front of bodice is decorated with dense patterns of small black beads and black sequins. There are three vertical panels of beading. The centre panel is bordered with gathered ruffles of black ribbon (one cm wide). The overlapping edges of the side panels of the bodice are edged with gathered ruffles of black ribbon. The front panels of the bodice are lined with black cotton fabric. The back of the bodice is plain. The bodice has a straight edge at waist level with a cotton tape hem. The lower section of the bodice is boned with ten fabric cased bones distributed across the front and back, attached vertically from the waistband. A fabric belt (three cms wide) is attached at centre back four cm above the waist, inside the bodice. The left hand end of the belt has a metal buckle ( 3cmX2cm). The bodice has a 7cm stand-up collar fastened above the left shoulder with three metal hooks and eyes. The collar is densely decorated with small black beads and black sequins. At each shoulder is an epaulette decorated with beads and sequins and edged with one cm gathered ribbon ruffles. The long sleeves are shaped at the elbows with four cm beaded cuffs fastened with two metal hooks and eyes. Above the cuff is a four cm fabric flounce, a row of gathered ribbon ruffle (one cm) and a three cm row of beading and sequins. Sleeves are unlined.costume, female, ladies black beaded boned bodice.

Alice Frances (Henty) Hindson's grey silk bodice is believed to be part of her 'going-away' outfit after her wedding to John Hindson on 15 April 1875. The bodice must have been a family favourite as it was used and amended over the years. Alice was the youngest daughter of Francis Henty and Mary Ann (Lawrence) Henty. Alice's father, Francis Henty, was the youngest son of Thomas Henty, who with his family, their retainers and property moved to the Australian colonies between 1829 and 1832. In 1834, Francis’ older brother, Edward, sailed from Launceston in Van Diemen’s Land to what was to become Portland in the western part of Port Phillip District [Victoria]. Francis, together with the first flock of Merino sheep [in Victoria], followed some months later. The first and second generations of the Henty family established vast pastoral properties in the Western part of the Port Phillip District. Francis Henty managed ‘Merino Downs’ near Casterton, while also living in his retirement at ‘Field Place' in Kew. The Henty Collection of nineteenth and twentieth century clothing, including outerwear and underwear, was collected, stored and exhibited over time by female family members descended from Francis and Mary Ann Henty. During the twentieth century, items from the collection were modelled in two fashion parades by various descendants [1937, 1959]. The items in the collection are historically and aesthetically significant, with provenance provided by oral and written tradition within or held by the family. A number of the items in the collection are very rare survivors, and provide researchers with the evidence needed to reconstruct the lives of notable women in the Port Phillip District [later Victoria] during the nineteenth and early twentieth century.The yoke is a bustier bodice, made of silk and silk organza with an insert of hand-tatted lace. The bodice is carefully boned and has a little padding in the bust line. It includes the name of the maker of the bodice as ‘Madame Jay, Brighton, 38 London Road’. The silk organza sleeves have hand shirring, trim, and frilled cuffs. The bodice is finished with a large, frilled bow at the back. Believed by the Henty family to be part of the ‘going away’ outfit worn by Alice Henty in 1875. Ladies black satin boned bodice. Centre opening, fastened with eighteen metal hooks and eyes. Waistband 2.5cm wide with eleven vertical fabric encased bones attached. There are two bones on either side of the front opening, bones on each side seam and five bones across the back. There is a decorative two cm wide ribbon attached to the RHS of the waistband that extends across the front of the bodice to the LHS with a seventeen cm black ribbon bow attached. This is fastened to the RHS waistband with a metal hook and eye. There are two decorative pin tucks across the waistband at the back of the bodice. The bodice and sleeves are lined with brown cotton fabric. The 6.5cm stand-up collar is lined with dark green cotton fabric. The shoulders seams and eight of the bone casing are reinforced with black cotton fabric with green and pink checked edging. The long sleeves are gathered at the shoulders and shaped at the elbows.
