The first Europeans to arrive in the area of the current township of Bethanga were explorers Hume and Hovell in 1824. In 1836 the Bethanga pastoral run was taken up by pastoralists from New South Wales and other areas of Victoria. In 1875 gold was discovered there resulting in the establishment of the township named Upper Bethanga north-west of the present town of Bethanga. Four years later copper was discovered, and an adjoining settlement of miners arose, ultimately expanding to become Lower Bethanga and the present town. Extract from the Federal Standard (Chiltern, Vic) Fri 12 Mar 1915 VISIT OF STATE GOVERNOR (SIR ARTHUR STANLEY) TO CHILTERN Splendid Street Decorations. Great Enthusiasm. From early morning all hands were busy preparing bunting, and before noon the streets presented a very gay appearance. Along Conness street from the town hall to the opposite end, flags of the Allies fluttered in the breeze, while in Main street the most striking feature to catch the eye was an extra-large Union Jack. The decorations were splendid, and clearly showed that the Chiltern folk are loyal at any rate. Streamers were placed across the road, from Brann's to the Star Hotel, from the Savings Bank to Grant's hotel, from Cannon's to Grant's hotel from Boucher's to Sexton's store, from Browse's to Force's from Scott's to Smyth's hotel, and from Harvey's to pole opposite. Flags were displayed at the FEDERAL STANDARD office, Gallagher's shop, Burke's wine cafe, Ryan's, Black's. Gilmour's (specially decorated), A. Smith's, Bank N.S.W., and Post Office, in fact all the business places and many private residences put out as much bunting as they could possibly get hold of. After being photographed by Mr T. P. J. Bonsema an adjournment was made to the manager's office where Mr Cock proposed the toast of "The King." Our Collection includes several photographs signed BONSEMA WODONGA or sometimes simply TBW. He later moved to Chiltern where his signature on photographs changed to BONSEMA CHILTERN of just his initials. The Albury Railway Station was opened on February 26 1882. It was the first large transit stop to be built on the border of Victoria and New South Wales. The two states still used different gauge train tracks, so the longest undercover platform in the southern hemisphere at the time was built at Albury, to allow passengers to quickly transition between lines. A new covered platform and new goods shed were added in 1884. Our Collection includes several photographs signed BONSEMA WODONGA or sometimes simply TBW. Steam locomotives operated regularly between Wodonga and Melbourne from the opening of the line in November 1873 until the mid-1950s, hauling both passenger and goods trains. They were critical in opening up the Wodonga district to further development and trade and contributed to the demise of the paddle steamers which plied the Murray River. Large numbers of sheep and lambs regularly crossed from New South Wales and Queensland into the Wodonga area for local sale and transit from the 1890s onward. From June 1930 to June 1935 an average per annum of 500,000 sheep and lambs arrived at Wodonga from New South Wales. During the peak of 1931 the number increased by 200,000. Before the construction of the Wodonga Municipal Saleyards which opened in 1935, there were four private saleyards which operated in Wodonga. They were owned by Gippsland & Northern Co-Operative Co. Ltd., Dalgety & Co., New Zealand Loan & Mercantile Agency Co. Ltd. and Younghusband Ltd. They were located close to the Wodonga railway station. Sheep and lamb sales at the historic Wodonga saleyards lasted for several decades from the late 19th century. Regular auction sales for sheep and lambs at Wodonga formally stopped in 1947, shifting regional focus to nearby Albury, though livestock transit and trucking continued through the local yards for decades after. The saleyards were relocated to Killara Our Collection includes several photographs signed BONSEMA WODONGA or sometimes simply TBW. J M Peck & Sons held regular stock and station sales at their dedicated Wodonga yards. The original stockyards were located near the old Wodonga Railway Station. The firm was originally established in Melbourne in 1887 when John Murray Peck went into partnership with his son, Harry Huntington Peck. Recognising Wodonga's vital strategic position as the premier gateway for moving stock across the state border, the firm expanded into the North East almost immediately. By the 1890s, when another son, Richard "Dick" Peck, joined the business, it became known as J. M. Peck & Sons and had cemented its permanent operations in Wodonga. To manage the high volume of local business, the firm often operated together with local partner Simon Mulqueeney, trading locally under the joint banner of Peck & Sons & Mulqueeney for land, municipal, and crown property auctions. They conducted fortnightly and seasonal stock auctions at their central Wodonga yards. The standalone entity of J. M. Peck & Sons ended in 1922 when the business was formally acquired by and amalgamated into the Australian Mercantile Land and Finance Co. Ltd. (AML&F).
