The bluestone is laid on crushed yellow ochre sandstone, with the base encircled by indigenous flowering plants. Each rock represents one of the six clans that made up the Boon wurrung. For thousands of years, Boon wurrung women and children congregated in this area during special periods in spring and summer. The area was rich in seafood and had fresh water wells dotted around it. Among the Banksia trees that provided shelter, grew indigenous plants and flowers through which the women made garlands to wear in their hair.boon wurrung, blossom, sculpture, public art, indigenous, bayside indigenous coastal trail, ellen josé, ellen jose, bluestone, sandstone

Hard cover book. Smoke and Shorty Author: Jack London Publisher: Mills & Boon Date: 1920-1940s Further Information: A plain volume bound in pale blue cloth, with a stuck-on library classification label ("PAT FIC LON") on the spine and no visible date, edition statement, or printer's imprint on the pages shown the copyright/date page. There's no gilt decoration, no illustrated boards, and no dust jacket. fiction"Smoke and Shorty," first published in 1920, is a collection of linked short stories by Jack London, not a single continuous novel it follows two Klondike Gold Rush partners, the tenderfoot-turned-sourdough Christopher "Smoke" Bellew and his grizzled sidekick "Shorty," through a series of adventures in the frozen North. It is actually the second half of London's larger Smoke Bellew story-cycle: the first batch of stories, covering Smoke's initiation into the North, had already appeared in the 1912 volume Smoke Bellew, and this volume collects the remaining six tales to complete the series: "The Story of the Little Man," "The Hanging of Cultus George," "The Mistake of Creation," "A Flutter in Eggs," "The Town-site for Tra-lee," and "The Wonder of Woman." These stories mix comic set-pieces such as a wager over an omelette and a real-estate swindle with harsher tales of survival, justice, and hardship on the trail, all set against the Klondike Gold Rush backdrop that London knew firsthand from his own 1897–98 prospecting trip.warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, book, smoke and shorty, jack london, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, pattison collection, warrnambool library, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, mills & boon

Index, ill, ,maps, p.380.non-fictionIn the Second World War, thousands of Australian boys lied about their age and volunteered for a war the scale of which they could never have imagined. Like many of their fathers in the Great War, they went with their eyes wide shut: under-trained, under-equipped and under-age. Some were as young as thirteen - too young even to shave. Many did not grow old; others came back broken. A handful are still alive to tell their tales. This extraordinary book captures the bold and untold stories of forty Australian children who fought in the deadliest war in history. Follow these boys through Libya and Palestine, Greece and Crete, to the jungles of Malaya, Papua New Guinea and Borneo, fighting for their lives, their country, their mates. Many of the photographs have never been seen. Haunting images of youths in training camps and behind the lines stand beside moving portraits of old men who have not forgotten.world war 1939-1945 - australia - under age soldiers, world war 1939-1945 - personal narratives - australia
