Photocopy from souvenir program for Vermont School Jubilee 1868-1919 featuring Mr John Broiwn, the first Schoolmaster. John Brown was the second Head Teacher at Eltham State School No. 209 (Eltham Primary) in Dalton Street having taken over from John Clarke in 1889. He died in office 23 Sept 1906 after a short severe illness at age 55 and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (Evelyn Observer 28 Sep 1906 p2). Box Hill tip looking east, showing Teachers College and State School 4 ft face.Record of various Shire of Eltham infrastructure works undertaken during the period of 1952-1962 involving bridge and road reconstruction projects, sometimes with Eltham Shire Council Project Reference numbers quoted. It was during this period that a number of significant improvements were made to roads and new bridges constructed within the shire that remain in place as of present day (2022). In many situations, the photos provide a tangible visible record of infrastructure that existed throughout the early days of the Shire. Looking southwest towards the Burwood Road overpass on the Camberwell line. GC took this photograph as he liked the laciness of the bridge supports. It is GC's assumption that shortly after the Granville disaster in NSW (18 January 1977) where a train derailment wiped out the bridge supports causing the bridge to collapse and crush the train, that bridges of this kind were replaced to have a single arch bridge structure and that the opportunity was taken when the third line went out the Camberwell, Box Hill, Lilydale lines. There are now three lines there. Under the shadow of the tree is a two-horse dray, typical of the time around Box Hill, used by Council for cleaning the streets. The dray had a tipping device so that when full, it could be tipped up like a dump truck to empty the load.
