Wilson, G.H.M. Paine The following is an excerpt from the Williamstown Chronicle Friday 25 December 1891 on the disbanding of the WVFB. THE OLD FIRE BRIGADE A meeting of the late Williamstown Volunteer Fire Brigade was held in the Mechanics Institute last Friday evening for the purpose of winding up the brigade and to receive the secretary's report. Mr L. Worthington occupied the chair, and every member present. Minutes of last meeting read and confirmed. The chairman then called on the secretary to read the report, which was received and adopted; the receipts L141 18s 4d included a balance on hand from last year of L35 4s 6d; the expenditure, L67 9s 4d, leaving a balance of L74 9s 5d in hand. It was resolved that this amount should be divided amongst the 16 members, each receiving Is 6 3/4d for every month he had been a member up to the time the brigade was disbanded by the New Fire Board. A vote of thanks was passed to Superintendent Worthington for the kind and forbearing manner he had acted towards the members during the 9 years and 10 months he had been superintendent, and that a letter be sent expressing the deep gratitude the members had towards him. Mr Worthington has always been held in high esteem by his boys, for when leaving for the old country some years ago they would not let him go away without wishing him bon voyage and a safe return to them; they have also shown their esteem to their superintendent on other occasions. A vote of thanks was also recorded to Mr W. A. Hall, hon. sec. for the valuable services rendered to the brigade during his 8 years of service. Mr Worthington also eulogized the assistance he had received from Mr Hall; Captain Murdoch, Lieutenant Wilson and Hose officer Godwin also coming in for their share of thanks. Mr Worthington, before declaring the brigade disbanded, invited the members to the Morning Star Hotel to partake with him in a convival glass. Peculiar to remark the first meeting was held in the hotel mentioned 11 years ago. After spending a pleasant half hour, during which several toasts were proposed, the superintendent declared the brigade disbanded and that the Williamstown Volunteer Fire Brigade was a thing of the past. The members then dispersed. Source: Williamstown Chronicle Friday 25 December 1891 williamstown volunteer fire brigade, 1887

Graham was born in 1962 in Glasgow, Scotland. He grew up in the south side of Glasgow and became an active member of the Boys Brigade, progressing through the different sections to eventually gain the organisation's highest award, the Queens Badge. During these years Graham became a proficient bugler and trumpeter, taking part in many nationwide competitions as part of the company band. After completion of his school education, Graham was accepted as an apprentice engineering officer by the Scottish Ship Management who ran a fleet of bulk carriers. After training at the Glasgow Nautical College he then went to sea, firstly on the MV Baron Napier and subsequently the MV Baron Kinnaird, the ship he was on when he travelled to Australia. On the 27th November 1983, there were parties throughout Australia to celebrate the winning of The Americas Cup yacht race, Melbourne was no exception and Graham and several colleagues went ashore to join in. During the celebrations, Graham climbed up some scaffolding to get a better view but a girder became disloged and he fell to the ground and was struck by the falling girder. He died shortly after despite the best efforts of the ambulance crews. Graham's body was returned home to Glasgow and a cremation service took place in the Linn Crematorium near where he lived and grew up. Money was donated by the ship's crew and officer and sent to the Mission (Reverend Chin) to purchase an engraved plaque in his memory. The plaque was mounted on a bench used as coffee table. In January 2025, Alain, his former girlfriend visited the Mission to view the plaque. The Mission is a place of memorial for seafarers.Rectangular brass plaque, on top 3 logos: Merchant Navy, Merchant Navy crown and flag of the SSM (Scottish Ship Management)Engraved: In Memory of / Graham Stewart Martin / Engineer Cadet / MV Baron Kinnaird / 27th September 1983graham stewart martin, engineer cadet, m.v. baron kinnaird, scottish ship management, ssm, 1983, america's cup, bench

The detailed account of Australian Commandos in China during World War Two. This, the story of Australia’s first Commandos, is an epic of the war. Here is hardship and adventure, pathos and humour, suffering and excitement. It tells of the men who went to Malaya with the 22nd Brigade, then sailed to Burma to train under Britain’s finest Commando leaders. Escaping from the Japanese, they journeyed the length of the tortuous Burma Road, crossing China almost to the coast. Here they trained the Surprising Battalions, some of China’s crack guerrillas, and operated with them in war torn provinces. The became famous as the “Lost Legion of the AIF” – the boys of Mission 204. After almost a year of guerrilla existence, the survivors were withdrawn to Kunming and flew to India. They were allocated to Brigadier Orde Wingate’s force but were recalled whilst on leave and returned to Australia after two years in the tropics.Hard cover first edition world war ii, ww2, australian commando, australian special forces, australian special operations, world war ii australian operations in china

Students attended Sunday School at the Kergunyah Presbyterian Church and were given prizes. The students included those aged between 8 and 12 years and included boys and girls. Sunday school was held in a little 16 foot square wooden building which came from Rocky Valley after it was no longer needed there. Ewen Wallace's father initiated and organised the move. Born in 1844 Prince Alfred was the fourth child and second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He joined the Royal Navy at age 14 as a midshipman and by 1866 had attained the rank of captain and had command of HMS Galatea, a steam-powered sail-equipped frigate. In the same year, Alfred was made Duke of Edinburgh. In January 1867 the Galatea set sail from Plymouth on a round the world voyage visiting the Mediterranean before making a state visit to the emperor of Brazil. Two months were spent in the Cape Colony in South Africa before crossing the Indian Ocean to Australia. The Prince continued his tour to country Victoria and in Bendigo tragedy struck on 18th Dec 1867. A model of the royal ship Galatea, crewed by young boys, was the centerpiece of a reception and a procession. The procession circled round, and entering the Camp Reserve piled the torches into one general bonfire. At this time the demonstration of the evening was marred by a sad accident. The Bendigo Volunteer Fire Brigade put on a demonstration with lighted torches which were carelessly extinguished, embers floated onto the model ship which quickly caught fire. Witnesses also reported that firecrackers were being thrown. the accident was caused either owing, to the fireworks or careless use of the torches. Three boys in the model ship were burned to death and several others injured. The Volunteer Fire Brigades' rigged ship Galatea, which had formed a conspicuous object in the proceedings of the morning was driven along the crowded thoroughfare manned with young citizens dressed in sailor costumes, and took fire from the fireworks. Some of the sails immediately caught fire, and before an escape could be made, four of the occupants were most severely burnt. With. the assistance of the bystanders, the flames were quenched, but so severe were the injuries sustained by the lads, that they had to be conveyed to the hospital. Of the four, one, James Brown, son of Mr.James Brown, formerly, of the Water Supply department in Sandhurst and now of Tasmania, recovered from his injuries, but the other three died shortly after the accident. They were Wm. Langston McGrath, Sylvester Francis Cahill and Thomas Walters, each about eight years of age. They were buried at the Back Creek Cemetery, and a movement, initiated b ythe citizens, resulted in their graves being marked by public memorials. In connection with this sad event it should be mentioned that when the explosion of fireworks on board the model ship took place, Mr. Meagher, the captain of the brigade, although struck on the head by a rocket, dragged several of the boys from the flames. He and Mr. Hickey, one of the members of the brigade, were severely burned in their efforts to save the boys, in which they were assisted by Mr. Irving.Bendigo Historical Society excursion to the Bendigo Cemetery and visit to the graves and memorial of the three boys burned to death in a model of the ship Galatea during the visit of the Prince AlfredDuke of Edinburgh in 1867. The DVD contains a slide show of the excursion. The photos taken by Libby Luke are published here.history, bendigo, galatea tragedy
