Established in 1921 by Reginald Langdon Buller, the ‘Calliope Vineyard’ was named after the only surviving ship from the Great Hurricane at Samoa - 1889. A.B. (Banjo) Patterson’s Ballad Of The Calliope tells the tale in stirring fashion. Reginald’s vision of his new enterprise successfully sailing through the tempests of business and agricultural life proved prophetic. Coincidently, Calliope is also the Greek Goddess of Poetry. ​ Today Buller Wines remains a local family business. Pretty Valley Alpine Lodge was built at Falls Creek, Victoria in about 1963. The top floor was the former mess building at Rocky Valley hydro camp. In 1978, Barry Jones came to Falls Creek in 1978 before purchasing the Pretty Valley Alpine Lodge in 1979. He initially intended to stay for about three years but was still there four decades later. One of the important features of the Pretty Valley Alpine Lodge was Christies Cocktail Bar. Christies was the place to go for cocktails and après ski in the 80s and early 90s. In 1996, Barry decided to take a calculated gamble. Christies cocktail bar, which traded on the premise for the ten previous winters was revamped in favour of an English pub, the Cock N Bull, in the heart of Falls Creek. The pub with traditional English fare and beers on tap rapidly became a success. Anglophile memorabilia, English relics, intimate wood-panelled booths, an authentic bar and two comfortable snugs all added to the atmosphere and style of something truly unique in the snowfields.
