In 'The Frilled-neck Filly of Bundoora Homestead', West reflects upon the influence of European domestic animals over the Australian environment and the radical impact of introduced animals on the natural flora and fauna. The ‘Frilled-neck Filly’, a fantastic hybrid curio of lizard and horse, takes up a somewhat menacing stance a short distance away from Bundoora Homestead, a stately Queen Anne style Federation mansion and horse stud. The artwork was created first as a diorama with a hand-painted background and then photographed through glass, flattening the texture to further distort the legitimacy of colonial settlement. Artist Bio Sharon West is a local Darebin artist with a studio in Northcote who practices principally in the mediums of painting, assemblage and digital media. Since 1999 she has taught visual arts in the School of Art at RMIT University. In 2009, West completed her Masters of Art at RMIT University examining the relationship between settler and Indigenous cultures within the context of Australian colonial art history. She is the recipient of various awards including the Excellence in Conceptual Photography Award Kodak Salon (CCP, 2011) Bendigo Bank Emerging Award for the ANL Maritime Art Awards (Mission to Seafarers, 2011), and winner of the Darebin Art Show (2011). Her artwork is held in public collections including the State Library of Victoria, City of Melbourne and the Museum of the British Empire (UK) as well as many private collections.bundoora homestead

"A key concern of my art is the investigation of colour. In both oil painting and watercolour, I use concentrated pigments. This is imperative in achieving the highest intensity of individual colour. Also, and most importantly, when mixing it allows the greatest dynamic range for ‘colour space’ – the depiction of form and space, light and dark through colour." - John SheehanJohn Sheehan studied painting at the Victorian College of the Arts (1993). He presented a solo exhibition at Bundoora Homestead Art Centre in 2013 surveying his work from 1991 to 2012.

Aunty Marlene Gilson is a proud Wadawaurrung traditional owner and Elder. Her multi-figure paintings work to overturn colonial narratives by re-contextualising the representation of historical events. Learning Wathaurung history from her grandmother, Marlene began painting in 2008 as a form of therapy, while recovering from an illness. She has received considerable accolades including exhibiting a series of works in the Sydney Biennale in 2018. The artist’s meticulously rendered works display a narrative richness and theatrical quality akin to the traditional genre of history painting. Marlene has developed an extensive body of work which relates to her ancestral lands which covers Ballarat, Werribee, Geelong, Skipton and the Otway Ranges in Victoria. Marlene was invited to create a new work for the Darebin Art Collection that either related to the City of Darebin or her traditional lands. She chose the subject of Bundoora Homestead for this new commission and has included First Nations people alongside colonial settlers and members of the Smith Family enabling an opportunity to reflect on the incredible history of Bundoora Homestead and its surrounds. This painting brings Aboriginal people and Colonialists into the one space living harmoniously and in doing so reminds us that reconciliation may be a possibility. "We visited Bundoora Homestead and farm, what an amazing place. In my research I found that Mr Smith built a stone hut for the Aboriginal people to stay when they visited. They bred cattle and horses, Wallace being the greatest sire in Australia and is buried on the property. They had three gardeners and four children, which I have painted in the garden with Mr and Mrs Smith seated watching the children play. Thank you for allowing me to look into the history of John and Helen Smith. I hope I have captured their life and amazing Homestead and surrounds." - Marlene Gilson
