Camp 1, Walter and his internee friend Rudolf Schultz crafted ...Creator Walter Kiessling was interned in September 1939, leaving his pregnant wife, Rosa, alone in Melbourne. After visiting Walter in Dhurringile Interment Camp and then Camp 1, wife Rosa then appealed to Camp 1 Commandant Major Schrader for permission to have Walter visit her and the baby in hospital under guard escort. Soon after, permission was given to take the baby to Camp 1 for a christening with a Lutheran Pastor. Model - hut, Lothar Streker, Sleeping Quarters
made by former internee of Camp 3, Lother Streker. Open model enclosed on 3 sides. 3 ply wooden floor, timber frame lined with Masonite for the walls. Sign attached to a piece of laminex and then attached to one of the walls by 2 pieces of aluminium. Model is screwed together and a piece of cardboard attached to the base. Inside this model are articles issued to internees quarters: 1 - small white, with blue stripes, toweling covered pillow; 2 - white cotton pillow case to fit pillow; 3 - small yellow piece of toweling representing a towel; 4 - 2 small white sheets; 5 - 2 small grey blankets; 6 - small wooden bed with metal wire base; 7 - small brown hessian mattress filled with straw. Depicting five tiny carved figures doing different jobs transferring goods at Tocumwal Railway Gauge Change. Made by former camp 2 Tatura internee after his release in 1942 to the 8th Employment Co. at Tocumwal. Kurt Lewinski was a former Dunera Boy, originally from Berlin, refugee in England in 1938 and transported to Australia in 1940.Wood carving of 5 tiny carved figures - 1 stacking cases, one carrying large filled bag on his shoulders (piece missing when items delivered), one wheeling pallet of large timber boxes, one pushing barrel and one carrying heavy box. The reproduction of the booklet was carried out on equipment in the office of the Camp Garrison, and copies of the booklet were made available to those internees within the camp and who were considered sympathetic to the German cause.The booklet tells the story of the internment of German Nationals in Australia from the German point of view. It also lists the names, internment number, dates of birth and capture, and the State where the capture took place.
