Captain Kenneth Aubrey Mickle D.S.O., originally of St Kilda, served in the British Army with the Royal Garrison Artillery during World War I and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) for his leadership and gallantry. He died on 30 July 1919 at the age of 33 after a long illness and is buried at Brighton Cemetery. An article in The Argus newspaper of 6 August 1917 contained the following report: "A cable message received on Friday last announced that the D.S.O. had been awarded to Captain Kenneth Aubrey Mickle, of the Royal Garrison Artillery. Captain Mickle is the elder son of Mr D. Mickle, of Marine parade St. Kilda, and was born in that suburb. He was educated at Queen's College, and after qualifying as a metallurgist, studied at the Melbourne University for three years. There he won the Grimwade Prize and other distinctions. On the outbreak of war Captain Mickle held a responsible position on the Burmah mines. He enlisted in England, and received a commission. He saw much fighting on the Somme, and in the batter of Arras, where he commanded a heavy trench mortar brigade attached to a Highland division. In a letter referring to the last-mentioned battle he wrote:- "My little commando has of late been quite in the limelight. Two of my officers received M.C.'s, one was mentioned in despatches, and five of the N.C.O.'s and men received military medals."
