After the war, the recreation hall paintings and all, was moved from the camp to the nearly town of Murchison and used as the RSL local dance hall for 50 years. When the hall was demolished the paintings were restored and framed by citizens of Murchison. The von Gruenewaldt murals presently hang in the David Jones Nursing home and other public buildings in Murchison.Photograph of caricature painted on mess hut wall. The caricatures are part of a photo album of Comradeship activities (from 1930 to 1977) see items from 01027 to01036.The Comradeship photo album was put together by the Comradeship committee and records events that Legatees did and places they lived or visited. Some appear to be trips to visit other Legatees living overseas and social occasions held in different places. Meetings of legatees often were held in hotels and coffee palaces and clubs before Legacy House was purchased in the mid 1950s. This could have been from a weekly meeting or from a special event. Cyril Smith was a popular figure amongst his contemporaries and this has been recognised by the plaque from those who new him. Appreciation of fellow Legatees to a comrade. The plaque has sentimental value, the words, the time and effort to make it by fellow Legatees shows the high regard in which Cyril was held. Caricature and signatures on a piece of 3 ply wood, front varnished, rectangular shape. Hole drilled top centre.Handwritten message in black ink "Our Cyril.,Heres from every cobber who wore the old chapeau". A caricature of Cyril Smith engraved (burnt) into the timber. Signatures of many Legatees, signed in ink. Reverse side, "Cyril - From all old cobbers of Melbourne Legacy Club with happy memories Legacy. 1938." Melbourne LegacyDocument - Menu card, The One and Only Dono, 1958
The dinner took place on Tuesday 25th November 1958 at The Naval and Military Club; there is no indication of what the occasion might have been. The two caricatures are clearly of the same person and are signed by Pat Hanna, in the same style as the drawings in 01293 and 01290, it is possible that 'Donno' might have been Donovan Joynt though his name isn't in the autographs. (Donovan Joynt was a prominent original Legatee and VC winner in France in 1918, and looks similar to the drawing). It may not have been an official Legacy occasion but simply a gathering of Legatees at the Naval and Military Club. The artist Pat Hanna was a founding member of Melbourne Legacy. Legacy kept some of his works in the archive.As well as demonstrating the conviviality of Legatees, it attests to the food usually offered at dinners in the 1950s. The 'Papa au Rum' listed for dessert might have been a misprint for 'Baba au Rhum' which was popular at the time. Printed and folded menu card, black on white, with the menu printed in purple by a spirit duplicator; two handrawn blue ballpoint caricatures, autographed in blue biro by participants.14 autographs: F.Meldrum, James G.
