It was built for Frederick, later Sir Frederick, Grimwade, to the design of architect Thomas Watts in 1875. Today the complex has been incorporated in the Melbourne Grammar Junior School campus. It retains not only the main house but also the stables and mature garden setting with driveway and gates. It is aesthetically significant (Criterion E) as an imposing yet stately large house of its time, the classic Italian form with comer verandah terminated by projecting wings being most distinctively seen in this instance. It is enhanced not only by the garden setting but also by the delicate cast iron verandah spandrels, stained glass work and stencilled ceiling in the music room. City of Glen Eira’s Heritage Management Plan Vol 2 p79 (this is p84 of the pdf version) – HO12 Beauville Estate and environs, Murrumbeena: The Beauville Historic Area is important at the State level as the first large housing estate undertaken by the AV Jennings Construction Co, later Jennings Group Limited, Victoria’s largest home builder. It is important also as a very early estate development incorporating a range of features other than houses and including made roads, shops and recreation facilities. In this respect it was the forerunner of the comprehensively planned housing estate of the post war era. The estate is distinguished by its aesthetic values, as is the earlier and comparable Hillcrest Estate, which are formed by a combination of restrained diversity in house styles, with the exception of no. 30 in the emerging International style, and by a landscaped garden environment. Home 20 Sloane Street Stawell taken in 1950 by Albert Davey who resided there with his family. House has three chimneys bull nose verandah with cast iron lacework, weatherboard construction with picket fence. Albert (Bert) worked for the Lands Department and his family consisted of 4 girls oldest being Aubrey about 18, Beverley about 16, Gwenda about 14 and the baby Faye about 4. and Alberts wife Phyllis. Albert worked all over Victoria from Buchan where they lived in the Caves Residence for 6 months, in Omeo, Yackandandah, Stawell, Wangaratta and Shepperton and then Melbourne where he took on the top job of Chief Superintendent of the Lands Dept. Now, 2018 uses as a cottage for distributing food by Inter Church CouncilResidence 20 Sloane Street Stawell housing

The Kew Asylum Entrance Gateway and an adjacent gate lodge were built at the Princess Street entrance in 1873.1 The imposing sandstone pillars and cast-iron gates impressed upon visitors the therapeutic and civilising vision of the asylum. The entrance opened onto a tree-lined drive (now known as Main Drive) which culminated in an elliptical carriageway in front of the main building. The gates were listed by Heritage Victoria in 2020. The citation reads: "The Former Kew Asylum Entrance Gateway consists of two 4.5 metre sandstone gate piers on bluestone bases on either side of a 5.5 metre vehicle entrance set back from the High Street pavement. The 1870s gate piers are of Barrabool sandstone and repairs during 2015-16 were undertaken with sandstone from English Town, Tasmania. The gate piers are highly decorative and feature oculi, triglyphs, dentils, corbeling and other ornamental work. Each gate pier incorporates a pedestrian archway with a cast-iron pedestrian swing gate. Two curved sections of cast-iron palisade fencing on rusticated bluestone blocks extend from the outer edges of the piers to a set of shorter sandstone pillars on the High Street pavement. Straight sections of cast-iron fence extend 4.5 metres ending at two bluestone pillars. Garden beds have been created within the curved sections of fencing, bordered by concreted bluestone and planted with shrubs."
