This item was donated by Pte Edwin Stanley Tricker (3797633) who was a National Serviceman with the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He served in Vietnam with 1 Australian Reinforcement Unit from May 1970 to June 1970 and Headquarters, 1st Australian Task Force from June 1970 to August 1971. Originally called CH-47A by the manufacturers Boeing and the US Army, these Chinook helicopters were similar to the cargo version except for some beefing up of the airframe to sustain the vibration of weapons when firing. There were also flown at a higher rotor RPM. This Chinook has the 40mm cannon and rocket pods which carried the 2.75 inch folding rockets. These were hard mounted and aimed by the attitude of the aircraft. Two of the 4 pintal mounted 40 calibre machine guns can be seen in the picture. It has been reported that one was also mounted on the ramp. Only four of these chinooks were built and sadly only one survived the war in Vietnam. This calendar of early Melbourne scenes was produced in 1938 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the firm in Melbourne. The size, layout and images were a copy of the original calendar produced in 1863. In 1938, the company's premises covered an acre in Bay Street, Port Melbourne and Charles TROEDEL (1835- 1906) called himself 'The Father of Lithography in Australia". In 1932 the call was put out to the ABC to start a military band. The band’s task was to record music to play on air four times a week, and to perform live concerts for the public. By November 1933 a band was put together with 40 musicians from around Australia. The band was initially conducted by Captain H. E. Adkins, Director of the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall, London. After the tour, Adkins returned to his position at Kneller Hall, and Stephen Yorke, a retired bandmaster of the Gloucestershire Regiment, was brought out to Australia to become the permanent director and conductor of the band, which he did until the band closed in 1951. During the band’s 17 year history they presented a sizable program of music.
