Original plans for the Mount Buffalo Chalet, framed architectural drawings for the Chalet, titled " Additions to Government Chalet Mt Buffalo. Dated 1909. Signed Jas G Spence & E F Leary. "Ground Plan, first floor plan, elevation, Section M5 and side elevation –beautiful coloured plan, hand price onit of £970, also called Drawing No. 1.Beautiful plan suitable for reproduction for graphic work." "The collection of ephemera builds on the Chalet's holding of archival material with a range of interesting, original items. Dinner menus., stationery., luggage labels, tickets, dockets and plans help to interpret the structured routine and social conventions of the Chalet that held sway for so many years." (pg 127 MBCC) These plans drawn were most likely to have been drawn upon recommendation by Government Tourist Officer, J.C.Boyce. John Newton (the Lessee) suggests the addition of 2 new wings (24 rooms) and creation of a billiards room. Treasury approved money for these extensions which were not completed until1914. The Mount Beauty Chalet was built by the State Electricity Commission as accommodation for single staff working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Towards the end of the completion of the Scheme the chalet was used for accommodating tourists. This brochure advertises the attractions in the area and includes tariffs - the Weekly rate and Casual rate.The chalet was built for accommodating employees working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme and then became a centre of accommodation for tourists in Mt Beauty. These are the two main industries for the construction town of Mt Beauty with the Chalet playing an important part.Pale green sheet of paper folded in half, with navy blue print. These photographs were taken in and around Mount Beauty and the Kiewa Valley by Samuel Keith Pearce and printed for him as a foldout postcard by NuColor Vue. The postcards state they were printed for S. K. Pearce Pty. Ltd of Tawonga and Mount Beauty. Samuel Keith Pearce was born on 24 June 1917 in Armadale, Victoria. By the late 1940s he owned the Mt Beauty Supermarket, Newsagency, Drapery and Hardware store at Mount Beauty and also a store at Tawonga in partnership with his brother Gordon Cathew Pearce. For some time, they operated as Pearce Brothers. In the early 1960s Keith also opened a mini mart In Falls Creek. As well as being a keen photographer and an astute businessman, Keith Pearce was a well-known identity in the Kiewa Valley, making many contributions to the development of the area over a long period. This included serving as a member of the Bright Shire Council for many years. He worked hard to promote the interests of the Upper Kiewa Valley. As a sign of recognition and appreciation for his contribution to the community, the park opposite the grocery store in Mount Beauty was named the SK Pearce Gardens in his honour. Samuel Keith Pearce died on 7 July 1994 in Mount Beauty, Victoria Mount Beauty Chalet was built for accommodating employees working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. After work on the Hydroelectric Scheme wound down it was converted to become a centre of accommodation for tourists in Mt Beauty. Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. Appears to be an original piece from Mt Buffalo Chalet. Purpose made for the Chalet as inscribe d with Mount Buffalo Chalet to Clock face most likely in Victorian Railways era, post 1924.. "Interestingly, the photograph indicates that a big round clock was mounted on the fenestration just behind and above the cabinet (fig 36). Reminiscent of railway clocks, it was perhaps introduced by the Victorian Railways after 1924. it resembles the clock that was subsequently mounted on the wall above the Chalet reception desk, and more recently stored away for safety with other movable items in the Chalet. Closer comparison however seems to indicate that the two clocks have different wooden frames and probably differ in diameter." "A number of specific items, which have been useful in the day to day operations of the chalet, remain in the building, with each complementing the other to provide context, meaning and character to their setting. items such as the hall porter bell, the many signs providing information to guests, the wall clock, barometer and dinner bell point to the Chalet being a well-run social institution with a pleasant environment for rest, recreation and congenial company." The Aspendale Chalet was about 18 miles from Melbourne between the railway station and the beach. It was a seaside "resort" where people could camp amongst the ti-trees.
