THE CUTTY SARK: - The Cutty Sark was built in Britain in 1869 and was one of the last great sailing ships. At first, it carried tea from China. Later, it was used to transport wool from Australia. It became famous for its speed and held the record for the fastest voyage from Australia to Britain for ten years. Later, a Portuguese company bought the ship and renamed it Ferreira. After that, a retired sea captain purchased it to use as a training ship in Cornwall. When the captain died, the ship was given to a training college in Greenwich in 1938. In 1954, it was placed in dry dock at Greenwich, where it remains on display. The Cutty Sark is a special ship because it carried wool from Australia to other parts of the world. Models like this one help us imagine what sea travel was like before steam-powered ships were common, and they show us how trade, travel and migration changed over time. The Cutty Sark is also famous for being very fast. It set a record for the journey from Australia to Britain and kept that title for ten years. Today, people still recognise its importance because it has been carefully preserved and is on display at the British Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Its story has also made it a favorite subject for people who enjoy building ship models. Captain Richard Woodget (1845-1928) was renowned for his successful command of the Cutty Sark. He began his maritime career in 1861 as an apprentice seaman at almost 15 years old and received his Master Certificate in 1871. In 1881, aged 35, he took his first command on the vessel Coldstream. His sailing skill and careful financial management earned him the command of the Cutty Sark for ten of its voyages. For another year, he commanded the Coldingham, then retired from life as a mariner in 1896. The Cutty Sark was built in Britain in 1869 and was one of the last great sailing ships. THE CUTTY SARK: The ship Cutty Sark was built expressly for the China Tea Trade and was involved in the famous tea clipper races between 1859 and 1872. It was designed and built by Scott and Linton of Dunbarton, Scotland. Cutty Sark holds the record with 363 knots done more than once. On one occasion, it managed speeds of 362 and 363 knots on two consecutive days. In 1872, it had the misfortune of losing its rudder while racing the "Thermopylae" but was able to continue the race after repairs. The photograph of the Cutty Sark is significant for showing a special ship which carried wool from Australia to other parts of the world. The first HMV branded store was opened by the Gramophone Company on Oxford Street in 1921, and the HMV name was also used for television and radio sets manufactured from the 1930s onwards. HMV stands for His Master's Voice, the title of a painting by Francis Barraud of the dog Nipper listening to a cylinder phonograph, which was bought by the Gramophone Company in 1899. For advertising purposes this was changed to a wind-up gramophone, and eventually used simply as a silhouette.A green mantel Radio set, 'HMV' , 'Little Nipper' c1930. Angel featured as part of the exhibition Anatomy Lessons, shown at the National Wool Museum in 2024. The exhibition featured meticulously-sculpted, life size skeletons, making visitors question their place in this web of the living and the dead. From a towering giraffe stretching 4.4 metres in height, to an army of over 50 delicately rendered frogs, this exhibition was enthralling in scale. Each sculpture is an accurate portrayal of a real animal and is carefully measured, drawn, and moulded from steel, wire, and foam. The frame is then intricately knitted over to create these thought-provoking pieces. Each sculpture tells a story, one of the collection of animals by museums and collectors, of Western safari hunters, of human encroachment, and of the often-sad role of the animals in our lives. These underlying concepts are explored and reflected by the materials used. Wool, that speaks of warmth, of comfort, of care, meets the size, grace, and sheer breathtaking beauty of the pieces, clashing with the hard and complex stories beneath. The smallest of Beevors’ knitted pieces was made while reflecting on the global tropical fish trade. At the time, press reports predicted that the imminent release of the film ‘Finding Dory’ would increase demand for pet tropical fish. People enjoy a good fish story, but studies have revealed that widespread reports of the ‘Nemo Effect’ following the debut of the film’s predecessor, ‘Finding Nemo’, were exaggerated. Data collected to assess people’s interest in blue tang, the species of the title character in ‘Finding Dory’, revealed an increase in online searches for “blue tang”, but no evidence of an increase in their trade or visits to public aquariums to observe them. When discussing the action and attitude effects of pop culture depictions of animals, it is necessary to investigate evidence-based material. Pop culture, wildlife documentaries, web videos, blogs, and news stories: there is a great ocean of content to consume, but the mechanisms by which witnessing these representations of animals and nature leads to tangible behaviour change, positive or bad, individual and social, remains poorly understood. In a world inundated with messaging and content, could a simple phrase like “fish are friends, not food” influence attitudes? Originally from Australia, Michele Beevors has been practicing in New Zealand for the last 20 years. She is Head of Sculpture at Dunedin School of Art, Otago Polytechnic, New Zealand’s oldest, and one of its most prestigious, art schools. Beevors has exhibited in galleries, museums, and exhibition spaces in across New Zealand, Australia and Vienna with art that is defiant, unconventional, and moving.Knitted white woollen fish skeleton, with black pupil.knitting, art, conservation, sculpture, skeletons, anatomy lessons, michele beevors, fish, angel fish

Hard cover book. The Ordeal of Richard Feverel Author: George Meredith Publisher: Archibald Constable & Co Ltd Date: 1909 Further Information: Red cloth hardcover with lettering and patterning to spine in gilt. The spine has a Library label with an inscription.fictionThe Ordeal of Richard Feverel (1859) was George Meredith's first full-length novel. Its subject is the relationship between a cruelly manipulative father and a son who loves a girl of a lower social class, with both men self-deluded and proud, and the story ending tragically. The story's theme is that Sir Austin Feverel, after his wife's departure, becomes a strict and misogynistic figure who imposes a rigid educational 'System' meant to raise the 'perfect' son, shielded from female influence, until Richard turns twenty-five. Richard nonetheless falls for Lucy Desborough, a farmer's niece, defying his father's plans, and the novel follows the fallout, including a scheme by Sir Austin's friend Lord Mountfalcon to have a courtesan seduce Richard, Richard's flight abroad, his return, a duel with Mountfalcon in which he is badly wounded, and Lucy's death after losing her mind from the shock. The novel was drawn from painful personal experience: in 1856, Meredith's wife Mary began an affair with the artist Henry Wallis and, having become pregnant by him, she left the following year, abandoning her young son, whom Meredith raised himself.shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, warrnambool, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, book, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, the ordeal of richard feverel, george meredith
