Ted Child was the son of Matthew Francis Child (1839 – 1933) and Martha Jeeves (1857 – 1926). He was the grandson of one of the early pioneers Francis Child. Ivy grew up on the family property on Childs Road and took many photographs. Chiltern is situated on the Black Dog Creek was originally known as the Black Dog township. It was officially gazetted as a town in 1851. During 1853-54 the name was changed to Chiltern due to the resemblance of the countryside to Chiltern Hills in England. The first township lots were sold in June 1854. After the goldrushes Chiltern remained a prosperous community with a thriving economy based on agriculture, timber, and small enterprises. Born in Wodonga, after his marriage Thomas Peter Bonsema operated his photography business in Chiltern. Our Collection includes several photographs signed BONSEMA WODONGA or sometimes simply TBW. Thomas Peter John Bonsema was born in Wodonga in 1876 to Peter John Bonsema and Mary Ann nee Nash. His name first appears on the Electoral Roll for Wodonga in 1909 and on the Electoral Roll in 1912 he is listed as a photographer. His photographs capture many scenes and events around Wodonga and surrounding areas. Thomas Bonsema married Minna Louisa Jones in 1912. By 1914 he had moved to Chiltern, Victoria where he established Bonsema’s Photographic Studio. From this time onward many of his works bore the signature “BONSEMA CHILTERN”. As well as continuing to photograph landscapes and important buildings, Mr Bonsema was often the official photographer at school and community celebrations. He also sold many framed photographs and postcards from his premises at 68 -70 Conness Street, Chiltern. By 1943 Thomas John Bonsema had relocated to New South Wales and died in Beecroft, NSW on 14th July 1944. Some of his photographs are held in the Victorian State Library and Mitchell Library Sydney Collections.These images are significant because they are the work of a recognised photographer Thomas Bonsema who was born in Wodonga in 1876. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. William Lucas , who came from England to visit Matthew Child in the late 1870s. He purchased land from Matthew and married his daughter Catherine. They developed their property as the sporting lodge 'Glenrivers'. Their daughter Dorothea was born in 1888. She was an accomplished horsewoman who married her cousin Charles Percival (Percy) Child in 1917. This memorial commemorates the ideas of mateship through using the legend of the Pikeman’s Dog. According to the legend, the Pikeman's Dog 'Wee Jock' stayed by his masters side during the Eureka rebellion and stood guard over his body and grave. The dog was awarded a Purple Cross by the RSPCA for service to humans in 1997 and a bronze life-size sculpture commemorating him was unveiled on December 3rd 1999 at the Anniversary of the Eureka Stockade Rebellion, in Ballarat, Victoria. The bronze Irish Terrier has an expression of his sadness with his his head turned towards the place where once his master stood. This statue was relocated from inside the Eureka Centre to a more prominent position within the Eureka Stockade Memorial Park when the Museum of Democracy at Eureka (M.A.D.E) was constructed. The new memorial was unveiled at a ceremony on December 3, 2014 - the 160th anniversary of the Eureka Stockade. The new memorial consists of 22 large golden stockade posts – representing the number of diggers killed in battle – erected in a triangle behind the statue of Wee Jock, the work could be viewed from the cafe area of the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka. The triangular shape of the monument is metaphorically symbolic. The V shape can be interpreted as symbolising victory, and the 22 golden posts represent the 22 diggers who were killed. At the time of awarding the building the new memorial in July, the sculpture artists Charles Smith and Joan Walsh-Smith were quoted: “This ‘new incarnation’ will be a much more significant memorial than the original, and much more accessible to the public,” they said. “We have set the golden stockade post/poles in a graphically precise angle to each other, which both leads the eye to the dog and the pike, while, at the same time, creating a sense of controlled visual ‘unease’. The requirement to register dogs in Victoria commenced in the mid1860s and for most of this time has been a Local Council responsibility. Dog owners who do not register their dogs are fined. The origin of these particular dog registration tags is not known. These tags are of interest in that they are examples of the type of dog tag issued locally in the 1970s.These are five dog registration tags, circular in shape with a hole through the top for attachment to a collar. Each tag has a separate number. All the tags are made of a form of plastic. The 1977-8 tag for the City of Warrnambool is gold in colour and the Shire of Warrnambool 1977-8 tag is brown-coloured. The three Shire of Warrnambool 1978-9 tags are white and have silver-coloured printing on them. The pet dog is an Australian terrier. Bertha was the wife of noted colonial silversmith and jeweller, Ernest Leviny. Together, they raised a family of ten children in their home Buda, Castlemaine. The five unmarried daughters pursued their interests in various creative pastimes linked with the Arts and Crafts Movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.One of the few photographs of Bertha Leviny and her daughters taken together after the death of Bertha's husband, Ernest, a prominent Australian silversmith. The Leviny daughters were artistic in their own right, following the principles of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Dog tags were issued by the Shire of Bulla to all dog owners who resided within the Shire. The dog tags were used to identify dogs and to control wandering animals in the area.A gold metal dog tag with a small key ring issued by the Shire of Bulla in 1982. The lettering on the tag is engraved in the concave side of the tag. The tag is in a small brown envelope which has been fastened with staples at the end. The words Regd. The Dog’s Bar was opened in 1989 by the late Donlevy Fitzpatrick, who is credited with creating St Kilda’s bar culture. In the 1970s and 1980s he campaigned successfully against liquor licensing laws that prevented customers from sitting outside or ordering drinks without food.
