Thought to have originated in Austria in 1869, postcards first gained popularity in Australia in the 1890s.They were used to send short messages to friends and family. This collection was generated by Mary Emma Elliot of Talgarno. Talgarno is a rural locality in Victoria, Australia, situated on the southern shoreline of Lake Hume, about 23 km east of Albury-Wodonga. The collection contains postcards from across the world. Mary Emma Sibley was born in Ironbark, Bendigo in 1859. She married James Elliot in 1893 and they settled at “Kelso”, Talgarno. They had two children – Mona and Sibley. Mary Emma Elliot died in Melbourne in 1944, aged 84 years. Photographic Album - 19th Century Portraits. This album is in a handsome leather tooled cover with brass ring clasp - pages have gold edging to match the gold tooling on front cover.This album comes from ''Old Box 94'' which generally contains ephemera from Merle Bush. However, this album has no identifying inscriptions (but see the following notes). There are approx 44 portraits of children, males, females, mixed groups taken by a range of studio photographers (Sandhurst, Melbourne, Stuttgart and possibly from other cities?) There appear to be no inscriptions on the reverse of these photos - but not all have been removed for checking. One photograph (R Dermer Smith, Sandhurst has a photograph Number #753 on reverse and show a man/boy?, woman and child on the front verandah of a house. Portraits were taken professionally often on important occasions. As graziers from a prominent family in Redbank, Walter and Ada Ryder were well known and respected.Walter and Ada Ryder were pioneer high country graziers and cattlemen. Ada (nee Sullivan)'s family lived at Redbank. Their children were Walter, Victor, Beatrice, Vera, Lorna and Dorothy. Walter 1872 - 1954; Ada 1887 - 1983 Walter was a son of John and Annie Ryder - Walter's parents being one of the first settlers in the valley. According to Ada Ryder's notes and John Cooper's notes, Ryders were followed by Higginsons followed by Coopers in about 1867/8. Ropers held Mullindolingong Station/Mt Yorke Station, but had managers on the station before actually taking up residence about 1867/8. Whilst the Sullivans lived at Redbank (now known as Coral bank), the Ryders lived at Tawanga (correct spelling in those days) on Ryders Lane, Tawonga where John and Annie first built and lived; Walter and Ada then occupied the family home, followed by Vera Hore (nee Ryder) and the current owners Kevin and Rhonda Ryder.Black and white photo of an elderly man and woman both well dressed. KIA 27.1.1916 while serving with the 3rd Aust. Tunneling Coy. This was at "Black Watch Sap Hill 70". The Germans were laying underground mines at the same time as the Australians. The Germans blew their mines at 12.40am, this combined with the Australian ammonal mines made a massive explosion killing over 20 Australians. James Legg married Emerald Watson at Gembrook in 1885. The couple had at least 10 children. The San Francisco Instantaneous Photographic Company developed a new technique after 1870 which required exposures for only a fraction of a second. The Company would travel to advertised locations where they would take portrait photographs. This photograph is circa late nineteenth century. This and other postcards and photographs came from the estate of David Moyle (1938-2015) who was a police officer in Emerald during late 1960s-early 1970s, and subsequently at Belgrave in the early 1980s. David Moyle was closely associated with the now defunct Sherbrooke Historical Association.This postcard is significant because of its representation of a well-known local man and its evocation of a style of portraiture. It is also part of a collection belonging to a community member who had a close association with a local historical society.A style of photographic portraiture which became popular in Melbourne in the late 19th century, and which could be shared amongst family and friends. This one is sepia colored with rounded corners. The subject, James Legg, appears to be deliberately dressed as a working man and he is holding a long stick or tool and standing on leaves. LES KUM JEW (left)- in 1942, joined the Volunteer Defence Corps, then the RAAF, with JACK GOON (right). GUS HOMEMING (centre) enlisted in 1942 in the Royal Australian Artillery, and was posted to New Guinea. In 1944, he was seconded to the Allied translation and Interrogation Section to work in POW camps. To this end, and with other students including Jack Goon, he learned Japanese at Sydney University. He was then posted to Morotai. In 1946, he was sent to Japan with the Australian Intelligence Corps of the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces. From 1946-51, he was in charge of the Inland Sea Patrol. Promoted to Chief Administration Officer in charge of Tokushima Prefecture and its ten million people. He returned to Australia in 1952 and remained in Intelligence service until 1957. 2. EUNICE LEONG (top left) worked from 1940 as a wireless operator for the Army in Melbourne, Sydney and Alice Springs, and as a signals instructor at Bonegilla. Her sister, VALDA (top right) worked as a radar plotter with the WAAAF, and her brother MAX (bottom right) went with the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces to Japan after the War. 3. The magazine was produced as a tribute to Lillian Roxan who was a great Australian and an international journalist. It is not dated but was published by Sungravure Pty Ltd circa 1974-75, The editor, Ailsa Craig wrote for the the magazine Woman's Day in the 1950s and 60s. she had an active career in journalism from 1960-1980. it contains b/w and sepia photographs. This magazine style paperback book contains photos of an earlier Australia.A paper magazine - AUSTRALIA ALBUM -THE PAST IN PICTURES. It contains prints of historic photos. On the front cover is a portrait of three young children dressed in early 19th century clothing. This is inside an oval frame with a gold border. There is a wreath of colourful flowers and butterflies surrounding this.The title is printed in red at the top. In the top right-hand corner is the price $1.50. It was edited by Ailsa Craig and contains photos and text from readers of Womans Day, The Sydney Morning Herald, the Sydney Mitchell Library and the Department of the Army. James came to Australia from Plymouth on the ship "Mobile" arriving 16/11/1853 aged 22. he married Alice Roberts on November 27, 1861. With a large young family he moved from Central Victoria to Glengarry in Gippsland where he farmed and set up sawmills at Glengarry and Rosedale. After hearing of land grants at Orbost and investigating the possibilities with Elizabeth, his eldest daughter he selected land at Pumpkin Point, Bete Bolong. The whole family (ten children from 23years - 2years) eventually moved to Orbost around 1885. ( read "From White Knowle to Pumpkin Point" by Hon Peter Nixon A.O.) He had the first saw mill. He convened the meeting that established butter factory foundation and shares and was the first Agricultural Show president,James Nixon was a significant and influential citizen of Orbost's early years.Portrait done in oils of Nixon, James Mr. The portrait is of the bust of Nixon in a tuxedo with blue to grey background.
