Henry Christian (c.1809-91), the grandfather of the photographer, was one of the first settlers in Kew. He arrived in Victoria with his wife Agnes and son Orlando in 1855 on the Gypsy Queen. He established a rope-making business in Bulleen Road by 1858 but was declared insolvent two years later. In his final years, he was celebrated as one of the oldest living settlers of the district. His son, Orlando Henry Beater Christian (c.1853-1930) became a member of the Hawthorn Band and a foundation member of the Willsmere Swimming Club. Orlando and his wife Elizabeth had four children of which Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) was the eldest.A photograph by Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) of Pakington Street, Kew. Henry Beater Christian, was a keen explorer, not just of his immediate environment but also of the Victorian wilderness. His major opus is contained in two albums in which he records, sometimes in majestic detail and on other occasions the intimate features of the natural world. His photographic travels during the 1920s, often in solitary ramblings but on other occasions with companions, recall the heroic landscape photography of an earlier era, pioneered by Nicholas Caire. In addition to their aesthetic value, the albums are historically significant records within the State of Victoria, of what is now a distant point in time, and of places that have become radically altered through human intervention.Sepia 'real photo' postcard of Orlando Henry Beater Christian, fishing in the Yarra River. To honour the contributions of donors, plaques were often installed in buildings. Initially these were made of metal, but later other materials such as glass and plastic were used. Unfortunately buildings do not stay in their original condition, nor are they necessarily meet the needs of changing organisations, and these plaques were removed during to the organisation moving into new premises. It is unknown to which organisation these donors contributed to, however given the wording, it could be the RVIB.Digital image of two plaquesIn Memory of Margaret Victoria Christian A Generous Benefactor To the Institute To the Memory of the late Winifred Tylerroyal victorian institute for the blind, nameplates -

Book - Religious Book, John Scott, D.D, The Christian Life Vol 4, 1696
This religious book by John Scott, D.D., late Rector of St. Giles in the Fields, London, sets about to explain some of the church's doctrine. The book originated from the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute. The book was printed for Walter Kettilby, a bookseller and publisher in London in the 17th century. He died in 1699 and was buried at St. Paul’s Cathedral. The book is significant for its age – it is one of the oldest books in Flagstaff Hill’s collection, published in 1696, well before Australia was colonised. The publisher, Walter Kettilby, passed away three years later. The book expresses the writer’s interpretation of Christian doctrine giving an insight into the doctrines and beliefs of the 17th century. The book was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. which has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. The Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute’s publication collection is of both local and state significance. The Christian Life Part III Vol IV Author: John Scott, D.D.
