This item is part of a collection donated by Gerald Anthony Cudmore was a Padre who served as a Chaplain in the Royal Australian Army Chaplains Department at Headquarters, Australian Army Force Vietnam from May 1965 to April 1966. He was a Catholic priest from Melbourne who was asked to come into the Army reserve before being posted to 1 RAR at Holsworthy.Two newspaper clippings three black and white photographs of soldiers enjoying Christmas Lunch and one of the French Colonial seaside villa. Research by project volunteer Ernie Ward: Alfred Hospital nurses enjoy their Christmas Lunch: The hierarchical system of Nursing and Nurse Training (as indicated by the headwear, armbands and seating positions) is on full display as Alfred Hospital nurses propose a Christmas Lunch toast (strictly non-alcoholic) to The Age photographer, Hugh Bull. Some of the bolder nurses have decorated their headwear in a festive way that would be frowned upon the other 364 days of the year. The soft drinks are Marchants and Elliotts, the flower arrangements feature the highly fashionable gladioli, and the floral patterned curtains have been pulled aside so the summer sunshine can stream in. The sunshine would, in a couple of hours, be replaced by flooding rainstorms which caused havoc on Christmas night. This very Melbourne weather phenomenon was the focus of The Age Boxing Day edition pictorial. At the rear of the room is Matron Grace Wilson C.B.E, already a World War One heroine for setting up and working at Australian military hospitals in Greece, Egypt and France (as seen on the second episode of the 2014 television series Anzac Girls). As Australia’s most highly-ranked peacetime military nurse, Matron Wilson also appears as the only woman in any official capacity at the Dedication of the Shrine of Remembrance in 1934. The Answer is a newsletter in magazine format that is sent to the widows that are helped by Melbourne Legacy. For the widows who are sight impaired a copy of the newsletter is audio described onto CD by Vision Australia and posted to them. It contains information about meetings and activities. This edition contained articles on the Ballarat Legacy Family Camp, Widows' Christmas lunch, a long lost dead man's penny being reunited with Legatee Graeme Heywood. Also an article from the archive about Brian Edwards a former JL who flew a tiger moth biplane around Australian for the 70th anniversary of Legacy. Also photos of our programs such as the walking group, the stamp ladies, and widows club gatherings. These images feature various personnel from 2/4th Battalion, featuring Christmas lunch, while training at Biet Jirja, the large AIF reinforcement depot and training camp in Palestine in 1940-41. Also featured are a number of images of Lieutenant Brown, who put together the albums. They are part of the collection of Bill Thomason, a Bendigo collector of militaria. The collection includes two albums put together by a Lieutenant Brown in 1940-41, possibly attached to the 19th Training Battalion at Biet Jirja in Palestine. The albums record events and personalities from units passing through the camp, including many friends of the author in a range of units. The images include those taken by Brown, along with images seemingly supplied by friends from different units.
