Churchill Island was discovered by Lieut. James Grant in 1801 and he planted the first wheat crop in Victoria there. The Cairn was erected to commemmorate this by the Victorian Farmer's Union. This cannon was always called the Shenandoah cannon as it was believed to be from the Confederate warship, Shenandoah. However recent research has shown this was not true. Small booklet prepared for the Sale of Churchill Island - distributed by Martin & Co. Melbourne. The Island was owned from 1929 until this time by Gerald Buckley . An absentee owner, Buckley employed the Jeffery brothers, Bob and Ted, with the help of Harry Cleeland, to run the property. The Jeffrey brothers were promised by Buckley that Churchill Island would be passed to them on his death but this never happened. The Churchill Island collection includes an archive of photographs from the late 1800s. The collection is presented in sets and series, of which this image represents the Buckley era.Churchill Island has been variously imagined and used to make a permanent settler colonial space since the mid-1800s.
