Photograph - Photograph of moonah trees
... at the entrance to the Churchill Island Visitor Centre.... at the entrance to the Churchill Island Visitor Centre. churchill island ...Churchill Island has a significant photograph collection dating from the nineteenth century. Moonah trees can be seen growing in various spots around Churchill Island. They are a type of Melaleuca and can live for up to 300 to 400 years. Moonah trees were of special significance to the Bunurong people, the local aboriginal tribe, who called Churchill Island Moonar'mia. The Bunurong people also have a special legend which relates to the Moonah Tree. The legend is that there was a boy and girl who had fallen in love and wished to spend each moment in each other’s embrace, this resulted in them neglecting their family duties. The lovers still continued to disappear to be alone, so the tribal elders banished them from their village. The moonah tree trunks are the reminder of the lovers in their tightly entwined embrace twisting around each other. A statue representing this legend can be seen at the entrance to the Churchill Island Visitor Centre.Black and white photograph of group of moonah trees by the shoreline.Catalogue number written in pencil on reverse. Functional object - fishing reel handle
E H "Ted" Jenkins was the paraplegic son of Harry Jenkins who bought Churchill Island in 1936 as an interest for Ted. Ted lived on Churchill Island at various times with his nurse Sr Margaret "Jimmy" Campbell, e.g. second world war when they ran a shorthorn dairy farm, and at other times lived in their home in Melbourne. He moved freely around the island in a cart pulled by a Shetland pony and had strong arms for shooting and fishing. The reel suggests he went shark fishing or deer water fishing. Ted was also keen on 'ham' radio, and had many friends from his school who became life-long friends and frequent visitors to him on Churchill Island.brass handle with turned wooden handles either end, brass flat and slightly tapered each end, hole in centre for attaching to reel.ted jenkins, fishing, reel, churchill island, western port, handle, jenkins, campbell, margaret, jimmy -

Photograph of HMS Lady Nelson Replica, >1986
The HMS Lady Nelson was commissioned in 1799 to survey the coast of Australia. The initial exploration of the Bass Strait by Commander James Grant has long been believed to be the marker of the discovery of Churchill Island by Europeans and there have been tales that Commander Grant was the first European to set foot on the Island. While there is little proof of this, the photograph still serves to contextualise this event and show what the Lady Nelson looked like.Black and white photograph showing a ship with pennants and no sails. Ship is on the land, displayed by the side of the road. There is a series of low slung buildings in the background. Through preliminary research, it appears this is a replica model of the HMS Lady Nelson built in 1986 that is located at the Lady Nelson Visitor and Discovery Centre in Mt Gambier.Catalogue number in pencil on reverse.
