Wax seals have been used since the Middle Ages and are primarily used for legitimising and authenticating official documents. This wax seal was used by the Campaspe Road Board (later the Huntly Council). The first president of the Campaspe Road Board was Sir James Joseph Casey who was a member of the municipal council of Sandhurst prior to holding this position in 1861.Circular, brass seal with wooden handle. Theodolites are a highly accurate instrument that measures angles between designated visible points in the horizontal and vertical planes. The theodolite has a long history, with the term first found in 1571 in a surveying textbook 'A geometric practice named Pantometria' by Leonard Digges. (source https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodolite). Cooke Troughton & Simms began when John Troughton starting selling products in Fleet Street, London in 1782. He went into partnership with his brother Edward in 1807 who expanded the business considerably. William Simms, a former apprentice with the company was taken as a partner and then manager after Edward died in 1835 and the company became Troughton & Simms. By 1887 the company was able to produce all the parts necessary for their instruments and the company employed nearly 200 people and was one of the most well respected firms of instrument makers of the 1800's. James Simms, son of William who had inherited the company died in 1915 and the company was turned into a limited liability company by his two sons William and James. Things however were not so easy for the two sons and in 1922 the business was brought out by their rival T. Cooke & Sons becoming Cooke, Troughton & Simms. Theodolites are used by surveyors as part of their everyday work and although there is no specific information regarding the provenance of this particular one it is assumed it was used locally by the City of Bendigo and / or the Lands Department.A grey theodolite no 39161 made by Cooke, Thoughton & Simms. Alec Sandner was a Strathfieldsaye Shire Councillor from 1982 -1987, Strathfieldsaye Shire President from 1985 – 86 and Mayor of Bendigo 2011 - 2012. Collected by the Sandners' it chronicles activities and politics from May 31st to October 19, 2012 through selected Bendigo Advertiser articles, cartoons and event memorabilia. Alec Sandner was a Strathfieldsaye Shire Councillor from 1982 -1987, Strathfieldsaye Shire President from 1985 – 86 and Mayor of Bendigo 2011 - 2012. This album provides at in depth understanding of the many responsibilities of a Shire President and partners. The newspaper articles, mostly collected from the Bendigo Advertiser, provides commentary on the key issues of the times. Fifty page photo album containing invitations, photographs, newspaper cuttings and event memorabilia dating from 7th August, 1985 to 20th February, 1986 documenting events attended by Alec and Mollie Sandner during Alec's time as Strathfieldsaye Shire President. Contents are arranged chronologically and the album begins with Alec's election as Shire President and includes letters of congratulations and provides an extensive overview of the breadth of events and activities a role such as Shire President and Lady are involved in. This scrapbook serves as a record to Eugene and Mollie Sander's time as Mayor and Mayoress of Bendigo. Collected by the Sandners it chronicles twelve months of activities and politics through selected Bendigo Advertiser articles and cartoons and event memorabilia from August 1978 to August 1979. Eugene and Annie Mary (Mollie) Sibson married in 1933 and both were associated with the Bendigo Hospital. Eugene held a the position of Medical Officer for 48 years and Mollie as a paid nursing sister until her marriage in 1933, although Mollie did continue to hold an unpaid position on the Board of Management of the Hospital for many years afterwards. Eugene Carl Sandner was born in Bendigo in 1906. He was associated with the Bendigo and Northern District Base Hospital from 1935 – 1983 including Acting City Medical Officer in 1942 and serving as Medical Officer for 48 years. He was President of the Committee of Management from 1979- 1981. Dr Sandner retired from full time practice as a surgeon in 1971 and was first elected to council in August 1976 and elected Mayor of Bendigo for the 1978 – 79 term. Hand drawn cartoon by local cartoonist Ian Glanville which appeared in the Bendigo Advertiser around August 1979.This is one operation I have to / walk away from ...!
