The Steampacket Place Development Board, a joint team formed by the Victorian State Government and the City of Greater Geelong undertook the $30 million revitalisation of the entire Geelong Waterfront from 1995 to 2000. As part of the revitalisation, in August 1996, the Steampacket Place Development Board purchased an unrestored Armitage-Herschell portable steam-driven carousel to restore and locate as a major feature on the revitalised waterfront. The Carousel was manufactured around 1892 by the Armitage-Herschell company of New York. The Carousel operated on the Mordialloc Pier from the 1920s to the 1950s. Twenty-four of the 36 horses are original, and believed to be rare examples hand-carved by the American master, Charles Dare. Acorn and caps are from a 15 metre high Valonia oak tree (Quercus ithaburensis macrolepis) which was uprooted during a storm on Tuesday, 1st December 1987. The tree was planted in the Geelong Botanic Gardens by the first curator, Daniel Bunce, from an acorn shipped to Charles Ibbotson from Southern Europe in 1861. Ibbotson was the Chairman of the Management Committee of the Gardens and a woolbroker and merchant who founded the company Dalgety, Ibbotson and Co. with F.G. Dalgety in 1852. The acorns arrived in poor condition, but later established well. Very few Valonia Oaks were successfully propagated in Australia. Valonia oak caps were an important species which were used in the European tanning industry and Australian tanners were eager to grow the oak here.Five immature acorn caps from a Valonia oak, first planted in the Geelong Botanic Gardens in 1861 from acorns forwarded by Charles Ibbotson. Vicki is a Geelong-based visual artist whose practice spans murals, painting, and soft felt sculpture. She creates both large and small-scale murals throughout Geelong and surrounding districts, often drawing on themes of community and social connection. Working from her central Geelong studio, Pip-Squeak-Art, she produces commissioned pet portraits and exhibition pieces, alongside sculptural works crafted from wool. Her socially motivated approach is especially visible in her street-scape paintings, which appear in both her canvas work and public murals. Vicki also does conservation work on the City’s much loved bollards. Commissioned for the City of Greater Geelong 2025 Christmas program. The painting was reproduced as mural on a carousel. In 1988 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip travelled across Australia to take part in the bicentenary celebrations. In April Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip arrived in Geelong to open the Wool Week Display in the almost complete National Wool Centre. Crowds gathered to welcome the royal couple, wool shearing demonstrations took place outside the centre and “Spud” the sheepdog exhibited his heading talents. During their visit to the wool centre they were met by the chairman of the Geelong Regional Commission, Mr Colin Atkins and Mrs Monique Atkins. The Queen was presented with a rug woven by the museums 1910 gripper-type Axminster Jacquard carpet loom and the Duke was presented with a woollen jumper. In return the Queen presented three letters from the archives of the Windsor Castle to the museum. The couple left in the afternoon, charming the Geelong crowd.
