From the 1880s to c. 1920, much of the Orbost district was linked by coaching routes. These photos show two different locations: one photo shows a coach crossing a sand bar. This is most likely the crossing of the Lake Tyers sand bar to Lakes Entrance. The other photo shows a coach passing a barn in a rural setting. Both photos c. 1880s-1920. These photos are significant because they show horses and coaches which were an important transport method prior to the linking of settlements within East Gippsland by roads, cars, and railway. In April 1989, the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria (AFV), in partnership with the Australian Women's Tennis Association, held some tennis clinics in Corio, including this one specifically for tennis coaches. The event was held as part of an outreach visit to Geelong and Corio. George Smith came to Wodonga c.1885 and carried on a business as a blacksmith and wheelwright in Hume Street. He subsequently erected the very substantial Federal Coach Factory in High Street. In 1901 the Coach Factory was sold to Mr C. E. Jones, but within three or four years George Smith again found himself in the establishment he had built. In 1907/8 Marcus Buntz partnered by a G. F. Simpson took possession of the Federal Coach Factory. In 1912 Buntz bought out the interest of Simpson and engaged a first-class wheelwright to do the woodwork. In 1912 a buggy could be had from £40 and a sulky £18. The business over many years developed from a shoeing forge and wheelwright business to a more modern day garage, keeping abreast with mechanisation. Marcus Buntz was joined in the business by his three sons, George, an A grade mechanic, Edward an auto-electrician and Henry, a blacksmith’s striker. The sons eventually took over the garage and handled both coach building and general service work. The firm also maintained the Wodonga Water Pump for many years, ensuring the town’s water supply. In 1948 the old established motor garage was purchased by Mr Jack Mylon. In July 1960 the building became Wodonga Market, housing a butcher, snack bar, milk bar, fruit and veg, Bill Dunstan’s Boat Centre and an Auction Mart. Mt Dandenong Road (CRB Road, New Road, Main Road) was begun in the early 1920s and completed c1926. This would be a very early photograph in the history of the road and shows a Jeeves coach travelling along the new road at the base of Farringdon Road in Kalorama. Ellis Jeeves established the coach sevice between Kalorama and Croydon in 1904. It originally travelled down the Old Coach Road. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas.Black and white photograph looking down an unmade road showing a coach travelling along another unmade road at the bottom.
