This clock is believed to have come from the Warrnambool Railway Station. The Railway commenced in 1890 and the station was opened in 1897. The clock was made by Wilson Brothers, a prominent manufacturing watch and clock- making business in Timor Street, Warrnambool in the second half of the 19th Century.This item is of considerable significance as an early Railway Clock in Warrnambool. Railway Clocks were important in the 19th century as prominent time pieces for the general community to use to establish the time of day.This is a clock with a circular face behind glass enclosed in a metal frame with wood surrounds The wooden frame is attached to a wooden rectangular box with a curved bottom. The box has a metal clip for attachment to a wall or a board. The metal face is white with black painted Roman numerals, which are damaged, and black printing. Minute markers are indicated. The original Tawonga District Hospital was situated at the corner of Ryder's Lane and Kiewa Valley Highway. The construction was initiated by the Hospital and Charities Commission with considerable assistance from the State Electricity Commission.The building was transported from Bonegilla where it was originally a part of the Bonegilla Military Hospital. It started with 12 beds and eventually increased to a total of 35 beds. "Add ons" provided theatre, offices, stores and Nurses Home. It was officially opened on 24th September, 1949. Up until this time, any person requiring hospitalisation had to travel to Yackandandah. This photograph is of the theatre and there was no anaesthetic or recovery rooms. While rather primitive by todays standard, it met the demands of the construction days as well as that of the Kiewa Valley community. Originally these mantles where produced to be used in gas street lights in Europe and North America cities.There use started in 1891. These mantles were used before electrical power street lighting was installed. They have been used ever since until safety concerns regarding radiation from their thorium infused particles made alternate mobile lamps more attractive. The age of open flame recreational lighting is fast coming to a close. The greater use of battery and generator powered lighting(ease of operation) has brought the costing of these alternative lighting to an acceptable level. The age of miniaturisation and volatility of the open flame has seen a greater swing to smaller and more stable lighting. These incandescent gas mantles were initially used in the Coleman White Gas LanternsThe Kiewa Valley, with its closeness to the Victorian Alps, allows greater opportunity for the "happy" campers to enjoy the outdoors. The lighting provided by the incandescent gas lamps allow the adventurer at heart to enjoy an alternative lifestyle and still having the comforts of "home" at their finger tips. The numerous camping facilities in the Kiewa Valley and the upper alpine region is testament that those living in the cities need a break from the day to day grind and go to a quieter and more spiritual environment. Artificial lighting, as provided by mobile apparatus, is highly valued by the urban gypsy. The outdoor recreational industry has significantly provided for, if only at holiday time, an industry that has a relatively high employment rate and beneficial to local communities.The gas mantle is in a fabric, pear shaped, of rayon fabric impregnated with cerium. It's appearance is similar to a very small fishing net. The fabric is very ply-able until it is heated by an open flame then it becomes more rigid and lets out an incandescent white light. Anne completed her secondary education at Presentation College Windsor. She left Melbourne to study Librarianship at Ballarat College of Advanced Education and completed a Graduate Diploma of Librarianship in 1981 and a Graduate Diploma of Education in 1986. During her studies Anne E. Stewart produced weekly shows on 3BBB Community Radio Ballarat, `As the assistant children's librarian at Geelong in 1987 Anne E. Stewart drove the Jolly Jumbuck storytelling van to various local sites, gathered the children and told a story. A keen community player Anne E. Stewart has fulfilled a number of pro bono roles such as the President of the Australian Storytelling Guild (Vic Branch), and Council President of the Daylesford Primary School. Anne E. Stewart is a senior writer for the 'Swag of Yarns' and has worn the prestigious storytellers Cape at Dromkeen, an institution that nurtures and develops children's literature. Returning to her alma mater in 2007 Anne E. Stewart developed a ghost tour through the historic Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) campus. Established in 1870, and incorporating a former gaol, the SMB ghosts came to life as she enthralled numerous groups visiting the campus on Open Day 2007, 2008 and 2009. In 2009 Anne E. Zilles Printers was begun by Lewis Zilles in the early 1930s. It was in McKenzie Street Ballarat. His son Jeffrey also became a printer - letterpress, offset and screen printer. The business became Zilles Printers/Graphics and was in Armstrong Street and later Bell Street Ballarat. Items are work done for the Australian Defence Force bases at Portsea and Queenscliff. They were training bases - Officer Cadet School and Australian Staff College. Originally the base at Portsea was the Quarantine Station established in the late 1800s. International protocols required captains of arriving ships to provide a clean bill of health from the last port of call. If this was not possible all on board would be transferred to the Quarantine Station by boat for observations. This was to stop the spread of diseases such as cholera, small pox, typhoid fever, influenza and the plague. In 1952 it became a military training base - Officer Cadet School. The quarantine station still operated and the Army had to be prepared to evacuated in an emergency. This occurred in 1954 when 113 passengers on board the Strathaird were quarantined with smallpox. Cadets and staff came with their families and was a small township. Training for the Vietnam War was here, Now gone the remnants of the quarantine station and army activites can be seen. Under Point Nepean Community Trust. Fort Queenscliff dates from 1860 when it was an open battery known as Shortlands Bluff. The Garrison included volunteer artillery, engineers and infantry. It was a Coastal Defence Installation from 1883-1946. The base on Swan Island was part of this and soldiers from the Fort would go on detail to the Island each day. A permanent group with their families were housed there. The children would attend the local school in Queenscliff. It eventually became and still is a restricted area. In 1946 the Fort became home of the Army Command and Staff College. Officers came from overseas to train. Families would come with them and be accommodated in the main officers residence "Maytone" or private housing rented by the Army. Their children would attend local schools. Staff Colleges were all moved to Canberra. Friday, September 28, 1883 was a memorable date for Wycheproof as on that day was the long-awaited official opening of the railway. It was recorded that no less than 23 parishes would act as feeder to the rail line. The Railway Station closed in December 1990 but the building was renovated in 2010 with plans for a community focus and cultural events.The arrival of rail opened up the Mallee. Local farmers began sending wheat, sheep and wool by rail. Improvements to transport stock was ongoing and the eventual rail extension north of the town, resulted in a well patronised passenger service for years.
