Our Collection includes several photographs signed BONSEMA WODONGA or sometimes simply TBW. Thomas Peter John Bonsema was born in Wodonga in 1876 to Peter John Bonsema and Mary Ann nee Nash. His name first appears on the Electoral Roll for Wodonga in 1909 and on the Electoral Roll in 1912 he is listed as a photographer. His photographs capture many scenes and events around Wodonga and surrounding areas. Thomas Bonsema married Minna Louisa Jones in 1912. By 1914 he had moved to Chiltern, Victoria where he established Bonsema’s Photographic Studio. From this time onward many of his works bore the signature “BONSEMA CHILTERN”. As well as continuing to photograph landscapes and important buildings, Mr Bonsema was often the official photographer at school and community celebrations. He also sold many framed photographs and postcards from his premises at 68 -70 Conness Street, Chiltern. By 1943 Thomas John Bonsema had relocated to New South Wales and died in Beecroft, NSW on 14th July 1944. Some of his photographs are held in the Victorian State Library and Mitchell Library Sydney Collections.These images are significant because they are the work of a recognised photographer Thomas Bonsema who was born in Wodonga in 1876. Benjamin Jackson Bartley was elected to the Indigo Road Board in 1871 and became the Chairman. Three years later when the Indigo Road Board became Chiltern Shire Mr Bartley became the first Shire President. This position he held for eight consecutive years and again in 1883-1884 and 1895. This is a recored time in office in Local Government. Mr Bartley commenced a cordial factory in Chiltern in 1859 and a Brewery in 1871. A gold framed rectangular photograph with paper backing. Extract from the Federal Standard (Chiltern, Vic) Fri 12 Mar 1915 VISIT OF STATE GOVERNOR (SIR ARTHUR STANLEY) TO CHILTERN Splendid Street Decorations. Great Enthusiasm. From early morning all hands were busy preparing bunting, and before noon the streets presented a very gay appearance. Along Conness street from the town hall to the opposite end, flags of the Allies fluttered in the breeze, while in Main street the most striking feature to catch the eye was an extra-large Union Jack. The decorations were splendid, and clearly showed that the Chiltern folk are loyal at any rate. Streamers were placed across the road, from Brann's to the Star Hotel, from the Savings Bank to Grant's hotel, from Cannon's to Grant's hotel from Boucher's to Sexton's store, from Browse's to Force's from Scott's to Smyth's hotel, and from Harvey's to pole opposite. Flags were displayed at the FEDERAL STANDARD office, Gallagher's shop, Burke's wine cafe, Ryan's, Black's. Gilmour's (specially decorated), A. Smith's, Bank N.S.W., and Post Office, in fact all the business places and many private residences put out as much bunting as they could possibly get hold of. After being photographed by Mr T. P. J. The feature film “Ride A Wild Pony” was the first Walt Disney Production film made in Australia. It was based on the 1973 book “A Sporting Proposition” by James Aldridge and was filmed in 1974. The majority of filming took place in Chiltern, Victoria with Conness Street being transformed into the fictional town of ‘Barambogie’. Other film locations were in the hills around Beechworth and the school in Stanley as well as on the banks of the Murray River and along the railway track near the Huon Railway Siding. Filming was completed on 11th December 1974. It featured British actor Michael Craig as well as Australian actors John Meillon, Andrew McFarlane and Lorraine Bayly. The images in these posters were taken on the Branch Line, Wodonga to Cudgewa near Huon. The Engine Driver is Bert Cadman of Wodonga. The original Empire Hotel in Conness Street, Chiltern was built about 1860 by Mr Charles Ewen. Early licensees included Messrs Moss, Berrigan, Ryan, Whitmore, Matthews, and Greenwood. In 1892 At the Licensing Court the Bench, through the objection of Inspector Irwin, refused to grant a license to the Empire Hotel unless premises were re-built. Local brewer and hotelier Benjamin J. Bartley undertook the re-build on the same site. The builder and architect was Mr P. Jacobson of Northcote, Victoria. The hotel had an imposing street frontage of two storeys and included 17 rooms, including the bar. On the ground floor were four bedrooms and a large dining room; on the upper floor five bedrooms, two sitting rooms and a bathroom. The building was completed in fifteen weeks. Mr J. G. Wall, of Chiltern, painted and decorated the building. Mr Jonas Greenwood was the first licensee of the establishment. Other licensees included Henry Soule, Joseph Tobin, George Miller, James Campbell Smith, Ilma Fitzgerald, Bridget Hassett, E.A. Grant and T. Gilbert. The Empire hotel closed on 31st December 1928 by order of the Licenses Reduction Board and the building was sold by auction 29th May 1929.
