These beds were adapted by early settlers who used recycled timber and rudimentary tools to build practical, multi-functional furniture for cramped, early settler living quarters. By day, it served as bench seating in the kitchen or as a bed for toddlers, young children or whoever wanted to rest.In the Slab Kitchen there is a dark stained wooden early settler's single sized day bed with four thick turned legs, four turned rods at one end as a bedhead and a heavy wire rod to strengthen the frame is attached near the bedhead. It has a hessian base to support the fitted blue cotton covered mattress. For the bedding there is a floral coloured cotton throw as well as a small bugundy, green and navy coloured corduroy patchwork quilt at the foot of the bed. There are two small colourful printed cushions and a burgundy maroon corduroy bolster to decorate the bedding. It has a pillow covered with a white pillowcase showing a blue flour advertisement. On the 28th & 29th of July, 1978, a second "Living with Arthritis - Aids to Daily Living" exhibition was held at the Peter Fraser Memorial Hall in Barkly St, Footscray. The exhibition, (the first of which had been held at Brighton's St Andrew's Parish Hall in May), was an educational and fundraising event in support of the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria (RAAV). In this photo, Dr Leslie Koadlow addresses the audience at the exhibition. A cropped version of this photo appears on page 4 of the Vol 10, September 1978 edition of RAAV's quarterly newsletter, News Review. It is captioned: "Dr. L. Koadlow speaking at Footscray. Photo - Elsmaree & Ben Baxter." The photo accompanies an article titled, "Congratulations Essendon and Williamstown", in which the members of these respective self-help groups were congratulated for maintaining the information desks and display stalls at the Living with Arthritis - Aids to Daily Living Exhibition in Footscray. The article states that the exhibition was held at the Peter Frazer Hall - which probably refers to the Peter Fraser Memorial Hall in Barkly St, Footscray. The event included panel discussions, a fashion parade, various demonstrations and displays - see a second article on page 5 of the same edition of the newsletter, titled "PARADE DISPLAYS AT FOOTSCRAY".B&W photo of a man standing on the floor in front of a stage. These caps were donated by Blake Thompson who with his wife started skiing at Falls Creek in 1979 and were members of Aurora Lodge for many years. They wore these hats at Falls Creek and Cedarwood Lodge which had a bar in the 1990s and was seen as “the place to go.” Cedarwood was built about 1979 by Peter Hyndman. It was a large lodge with over 100 beds. Like many lodges it has now been renovated to become studio and self-contained apartments. These caps are significant because they are representative of the range of memorabilia available at Falls Creek. Two souvenir caps from Falls Creek and Cedarwood Lodge. This book shows a collection of pictures from the days of the earliest settlement of Box Hill through to the 1930s. They show us the clearing of land for the establishment of farms and orchards. We see the early Whitehorse Road which was known as Corduroy Road because of the logs that formed its surface. This publication, originally suggested by Betty Walters, a former Mayor of the City, portrays the evolution of the central area of the City, from the first settlers to 1930. The selection of the pictures by the authors was based on the general interest and quality of the photographs. On the front cover: "Presented to Surrey Hills / History Group / by / Marjorie Morgan"box hill, (mrs) marjorie morgan, (mrs) eleanor finlay, early settlement, 1930s

There is no information with this item. In the Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tamboon and Omeo Chronicle on Thursday August 3 1893, there is mention of a letter from Mr Harry Roberts, Marlo Road, "offering to sell the corduroy road to the council for £10, on condition that the council arranges for the exchange of the old road for one on the nothern boundary of his property.-Application to be made to the Lands department for the necessary exchange of roads to carry this proposal into effect. From the secretary for Lands, asking the council to mark the roads required in the M'Colloch on the plan,-Attended" This is likely to be the man in the photograph. This photograph seems to be associated with a very early settler in the Orbost / Marlo area. It is also a pictorial record of dress in the late 19th century.A sepia portrait photograph of a bearded man wearing a high-buttoned coat seated on a chair with a woman standing beside him on the right.
