Bendigo Town Hall, built in 1859 and extended over three phases resulting in the present Mannerist style building of stone construction. The original 1859 design by George Avery Fletcher was a simple two storey building in the Italianate style, which served as the foundation for future remodelling and extensions by Bendigo architect William C. Vahland in 1866. The Town Hall contains fine decorative interiors in the main hall and council chamber along with objects and original council chamber furniture which are integral to its significance and heritage values. John William Satchwell (1853-1935), was a representative of the East Ward in Brighton Council for more than 20 years and was elected Mayor in 1922-23. Satchwell joined the police force as a mounted trooper in 1878 and was awarded valour badge in 1889 for bravery in rescuing drowning people from floods in Newstead. Showing the flood waters of 1946 around the Band Rotunda in the botanical gardens. Funding for the construction of the Rotunda was bequeathed in the Will of local resident Mrs Annie Williams, who was born in Daylesford in 1872 and died in Kew in 1930. Annie’s Will stipulated that the remaining value of her Estate be spent on erecting a Bandstand in the Port Fairy Botanical Gardens dedicated to the memory of her brother Hugh, a stretcher bearer in WW1 and who died in 1921 after being discharged with health issues, her husband Henry, and herself naturally. There is a plaque dedicated to Annie on the Bandstand She requested that the Bandstand be a replica of the one at Daylesford but by 1933 the value of her Estate had diminished to £76.4/8 which was insufficient to cover a similar design and the Borough Councillors felt it would be too extravagant for the Port Fairy Botanical Gardens. Local builder J.J.McLaren’s tender of £71.15/- was accepted and the octagonal concrete pillared construction was completed with the use of sustenance labour the following year. The Bandstand was opened in December, 1934 with a performance by the Port Fairy Band and local residents enjoying the entertainment and a picnic. In 1934 it was reported that there was some fuss in Council because of the whereabouts of the sum of approximately £3/- , being the amount left over from the build. Built in 1928 and destroyed by flood in 1934 Kane's Bridge, formerly Kane's Suspension Bridge, was then rebuilt in 1935. Built for walking traffic, this old walking bridge crosses the Yarra River at the Studley Park Boasthouse It providing convenient access to both sides of the Yarra River. It is a 2km walk to Dight's Falls. Kane's bridge was named after It was named after T.J. Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and federal level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. Monica Cecelia Murray was born in 1910 in Strathfieldsaye and married Thomas Flood in 1934. She served as Mayoress for four terms and died in 1973. Mayoress Flood was president of the St Mary's Past Pupul's Association and a patron of the Bendigo Girl Guildes.
