The French Collection was donated to the Society in 2022. This collection includes documents, artworks, books, costumes and artefacts belonging to two families. A number belonged to, or were made by the grandparents of the donor: Vera May Wing and her husband Hubert Charles McDonald. Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) , was a descendant of one of the earliest settler families in Kew. Employed at the Kew Asylum as a 'public servant', he was a skilled amateur photographer, photographing numerous scenes in Kew and on his travels around Victoria. The majority of his photographs date from 1916 to 1929. His finest photographs are housed in two photograph albums. Digital copy of a photograph from page 25 of the 47-page photograph album containing 261 gelatinous silver images, loaned by Diane Washfold with permission given to digitise and hold a copy in our collection. John Chapman has written in 'Bushwalking Clubs - A Brief History', about the establishment in Victoria of the first bushwalking club in 1888, and the popularisation of bushwalking during the interwar period. Henry Christian's 'walks' appear to have been undertaken solely or with a companion/s. Here the photographer takes a snapshot of a winding dirt track/road, thickly forested with native vegetation. Original, black and white positive print which the inscription on the reverse incorrectly claims is of Kew during the 1934 floods. The date may be 1934, but there is no evidence of flood waters or of location. The photo is of an intersection with a hotel on the corner in front of which a man is standing. The hotel would appear to be named Russell['s] Hotel. There is also an advertisement for Willys on the hotel verandah. Inscribed verso: "Yarra Floods Kew 1934" unidentified locations

This brochure was produced by the Country Roads Board in 1976. It became the Board's most popular driver education publication. The brochure was reprinted after requests for 20,000 copies were received from interested authorities and individuals. The Country Roads Board was the government authority for the construction and maintenance of main roads in Victoria between 1913 and 1983. It was succeeded by the Road Construction authority on 1 July 1983 and later merged with the Road Traffic Authority on July 1 1989 to form the Roads Corporation. James Cameron, an Orbost farming pioneer and Member of the Legislative Assembly, fathered the Country Roads Board. This plaque was possibly removed from a bridge(?) when the name was changed.A heavy rectangular shaped bronze plaque. the background is dark brown and the print and frame bronze coloured.
