This is a photograph of crew members that formed the football team of the S.S. Hororata. The vessel was ordered by the New Zealand Shipping Co Ltd of London, completed in 1914. In august of that year she was requisitioned ( as A20) for transport of the Australian expeditionary force in WW1. In WW2 she was known as the SS Waroonga and torpedoed in 1943. (Internet ref 2018) This vessel was a regular visitor to Melbourne and crews visited and contributed donations to the MTS.This photograph provides an early record of the many crew based football (soccer) teams that would enjoy matches when ashore with other crews. The Mission to seamen organised and promoted many such matches and encouraged the friendly competition during outings. In addition this particular group photograph is of interest as it indicates the many talents and interests of the crew through the items and animals the individuals are posed with. The man in the bottom row furthest left is kneeling behind a bird cage with a cockatoo in it. The man second from the left is holding a guitar. The man third from the left is holding a cat. The man fourth from the left is lying down peeking through the buoy with the text "S.S. Hororata's/Plymouth". The man second from the right is holding a lute and the man furthest right on the bottom row is also kneeling behind a bird cage with a cockatoo. As the national spokesperson for the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria (AFV), incorporating Osteoporosis Victoria (OV), journalist and editor, Ita Buttrose, was the special guest at the launch of National Arthritis Week (NAW) in 1997. The event, which was held at the AFV's headquarters in Elsternwick, was covered for the media by a television crew in attendance. In 1984, Television camera crews were in attendance for the launch of National Arthritis Week (NAW). This photo depicts Pauline Schulzoff being interviewed and filmed by a television crew. The photo appears on page 3 of the No 33, August 1984 edition of News Review, the quarterly newsletter of the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria (RAAV). It is captioned: "Pauline Schulzeff talks to a TV camera at the opening of Arthritis Week". The accompanying article states that the launch of Arthritis Week 1984 was held at the Independent Living Centre, and received much radio and television coverage. "On TV, news reports appeared on Channel 2 on 6 and 13 May, and BTV 6, and interviews on BTV 6 and GLV 8." BTV 6 and GLV 8 were both television stations in regional Victoria, with BTV 6 being in Ballarat and GLV 8 being in the Gippsland/La Trobe Valley region. This photo also appears on page 3 of the 1983 - 1984 Annual Report.
