The Farmers Arms Hotel was built on the corner of Main and Hailes Street in 1864 by George Iredale to cater for the ever increasing number of wood carters and other hauliers carting their wares between Melbourne, timber mills and the gold fields. William Dower came with his family to the Mt Dandenong in 1898, taking up a 10 acre allotment. William and hs wife Elizabeth had seven boys (Will, Harry, Bert, Walter, Joe, Edgar, Robert) and four girls (Emmy, May, Ada, Ruby). The property secured by William Dower was known as ‘Cambridge Gardens’ and had a two room slab hut. William and his sons added another five rooms using trees from the property. The family established extensive crops and worked hard for their success. The acreage extended to 30 when the family bought up neighbouring properties.Black and white photograph showing rows of berry crops. Photo album, Eltham Christian School, Nyora Road, Eltham 1981-1984 The Stokes family settled in this area of Eltham in the 1940s and were associated with the Eltham Christian Church. In the 1970s this church had met in temporary premises in Eltham. Lots of the original 1920s subdivision remained south of Nyora Road and a number of these lots were utilized for the Eltham Christian School, which was established by the Eltham Christian Church in 1981. The school operated on this site until 2000. The premises were owned by the Nillumbik Community Church who were in operation till November 2010 when the Eltham Baptist Church commenced a lease arrangement until the site was purchased by them in April 2012. The building is constructed of brick and timber with a balcony on two sides that looks over an expanse of grass. This cropped halter top and palazzo pants outfit belonged to Meredith Lenné, a lifelong Brighton resident. Produced by Melbourne designer Leon Haskin in 1972, the design was also sold in colour combinations of gold-and-brown and white-and-blue. Meredith remembers being drawn to the outfit because she liked the colours, though she only wore it a couple of times to dinner parties.Cropped halter top and palazzo pants with a Pucci-style print of abstract patterns in red, pink, purple, orange and white.
