Functional object Glass Decanter ...The Hotel Warrnambool had its origins at the corner of Koroit and Kepler Streets, Warrnambool,which opened in 1890 as the Grand Ozone Coffee Palace, a temperance hotel. In 1891 it was granted a colonial wine licence and in 1895 it became known as the Ozone Hotel (a private hotel with superior accommodation). From 1894 to 1907 Thomas Randall was the proprietor. In 1923 the hotel, by then known as Hotel Mansions, it became a fully licensed hotel. The building was burnt down in 1929. It was rebuilt as a lower building and continues to this day to operate as a successful hotel with extensive bar and dining areas. In recent times it has had two long term publicans Mr Laurie Taberner and Mr Stephen Phillpot. This crystal decanter would have been a common item in the hotel bar area. It is unknown how old it is. The Ozone later known as the Hotel Mansions then Hotel Warrnambool has been and remains one of the most significant building in our city. The item has strong provenance being donated by a previous owner of the hotel and has very clear etching of Hotel Warrnambool on one side. It has strong social significance also as many local people have socialised at the hotel over many years.Square glass or crystal container with wide beveled corners.
