In January and February 1968, Hue, located on the central coast between Da Nang in the south and the Demilitarized Zone in the north, was the scene of heavy fighting between US and South Vietnamese forces and units of the North Vietnamese Army which had attacked Hue as part of the 1968 Tet Offensive.
