This badge was issued in 1966 to a member of the committee of the Nestles Cricket Club in Dennington (Warrnambool). The Nestles Milk Factory was established at Dennington in 1911, being one of the few Nestles factories at the time to be opened outside of Europe. During World War One and the 1920s the Dennington Nestles Factory was the world’s largest milk condensery and at its peak in the 1960s and 70s was employing 800 people. It produced the drink, Milo and the coffee, Nescafe (this latter ceasing in 2000). In 2005 the Nestles Factory was taken over by the New Zealand firm, Fonterra and it is due to cease business entirely late in 2019. The Nestles Factory encouraged and sponsored several social and sporting clubs, including the Nestles Cricket Club and the Nestles Rowing Club. The Nestles Cricket Club commenced in 1944 and has been a part of the Warrnambool and District Cricket Association competition since that time. It still operates today under the same name and includes a women’s team. This item is of interest as a memento of Nestles Cricket Club, a prominent cricket team in Warrnambool today.This is a shield-shaped metal badge with a red and gold background, an image in yellow of cricket bats and stumps and two decorative patterns and gold-coloured printing. This booklet records in brief the history of the Nestles Factory at Dennington, Victoria from its opening in 1911 to its sale in 2005 to Fonterra Milk, Australia and the closing of the Nestles association with the Warrnambool district. The factory initially produced Sweetened Condensed Milk and by 1918 was the largest Milk Condensery in the world. In later years there were productions of cheese, Sunshine Powdered Milk and Nescafe Instant Coffee. Six two-storey residences were built for employees and there were twice-daily trains from Warrnambool to the factory and back for many years. The Nestanglo Social and Sports Club, established in 1923, was important in the community life of Dennington and beyond. James Parker and William McMeekin arrived in 1881 in Victoria and commenced their business a large proportion of which was in Warrnambool. They opened up a butter, cheese and pork export trade with South Australia, which operated successfully for sometime before South Australia altered their tariff duties which badly affected trade. After a period dealing with Queensland, they set their sights further afield to London. The Warrnambool butter Factory was commenced around this time and William McMeekin was closely connected with its establishment. They traded in other farm produce and machinery as well as having interests in land, loans and insurance. William McMeekin was a member of the Town Council for some time and J.P. McMeekin was a member of the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Society and was a director of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory. This booklet contains the address given by the Rev. W. Gray Dixon in 1909 at St. Paul’s Christchurch to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. It was published at the request of the General Assembly and the proceeds of the sale of the booklet went into Presbyterian Church funds. The Rev. William Gray Dixon was born in Scotland and was the Presbyterian Minister at St. John’s Warrnambool from 1889 to 1900. In 1900 he went to New Zealand to St. David’s Church, Auckland and later to Dunedin. Rev, Gray Dixon was the author of several publications relating to Presbyterian Church history and activities. This booklet was sent from Auckland by Rev. Gray Dixon to Marcus Saltau, his friend in Warrnambool. Marcus Saltau (1869-1945)followed his father in the produce business in Warrnambool and expanded it to include management of the Warrnambool tramway (which took freight from the town to the port) and a shipping business that had its own vessels and an interstate and international trade. Marcus Saltau was prominent in Warrnambool’s community as a Councillor, Mayor and a politician (Upper House Member for the Western Province 1924-1940). He was a founding member of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill Company, concerned with the establishment of the Nestles Factory at Dennington and a Warrnambool Hospital committee member and Chairman for over 30 years. The Jean Buick Saltau Maternity Ward and Marcus Saltau House at the Warrnambool Hospital survived as important community buildings for many years. This little booklet is of high significance as it is connected to two important Warrnambool people of the past – the Rev. William Gray Dixon and Marcus Saltau. It is the only Gray Dixon piece of writing that the Historical Society possesses and it is of double significance when it is noted that Marcus Saltau, the owner of the booklet was a friend of Gray Dixon’s, and was also a most important person in Warrnambool’s history. This is a soft-cover booklet of 22 pages. The cover which is completely detached and very torn is grey-coloured with dark blue and grey ornamental scrolls and shields around the title of the book. The book contains a portrait of John Calvin, three black and white photographs of places in Geneva, the music of a song, ‘The Marseillaise of the Reformation’ and some verse. The book was stapled but the staples have been removed. The pages are made of lightweight parchment paper. The illustrations have been glued in. The text is a publication of an address given by the author, Rev. W. Gray Dixon to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand in 1909. This window was removed from the Marcus Saltau House building in the Warrnambool and District Base Hospital when the building was demolished in 2009. Marcus Saltau House was erected in 1938 to provide for intermediate, private and midwifery patients. The builder was Ernie Harris of Warrnambool. The building commemorated the work of Marcus Saltau who was on the Warrnambool Hospital committee for over forty years and the President of that committee for thirty years. Marcus Saltau (1869-1945) was a Warrnambool produce merchant and politician involved in many Warrnambool ventures, including the establishment and development of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill and the Nestles Milk Factory at Dennington. The Jean Buick Saltau Maternity Ward at the Warrnambool Hospital was established by Marcus Saltau in 1928 in memory of his first wife. It comes from a farm (number 16) in Dennington, a settlement and now a suburb west of Warrnambool. It may have been supplying milk to the Nestles factory at Dennington by a truck or taken to a Nestles depot nearby. The Nestles factory was established in Dennington in 1907 and closed in 2005. This is a Nestle badge. Henri Nestle formed the Nestle Company in 1867 with the headquarters based in Switzerland. Today this company is the largest nutrition, health and wellness company in the world. Nestle Australia was established in 1908 and a Nestle factory was established in Dennington (Warrnambool) in 1911. At this time the name, Nestle, was retained but the factory was actually operated by the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company. The Dennington factory was for many years the world's largest milk condensery. In 1948 the factory began producing Nescafe coffee. In 2008, after 94 years of operations, the Dennington factory was sold to the New Zealand firm of Fonterra. These items come from a Gordon Vacuum Break Milking Machine. Vacuum Break milking machines were popular from the 1930s on, with the systems interrupting or breaking the constant milking vacuum, thus avoiding or reducing the harmful effects of vacuum acting constantly on the cow’s teats. An inserted rubber section acted as a valve which affected the pinching action by closing and opening alternately. These items came from a milking machine which was used on the property of Reginald Dalton Hooker and his wife Marjorie. The property was at 155 Rooneys Road, Dennington and twenty cows were milked on land irrigated by a bore. The milk was supplied to the Nestles Factory in Dennington (now Fonterra). These two plates are of interest as they are reminders of the local dairying industry during the mid 20th century. This typewriter belonged to Gordon William Toleman (1910-1975). The first known Toleman born in the Western District was born at Mortlake in 1845 and Gordon Toleman was also born in Mortlake. He lived with his family in Warrnambool for many years. He was an accountant the Nestles Factory at Dennington for over 25 years. He was actively involved in community affairs, including the Warrnambool Urban Fire Brigade (life member), the Florado Festival, the Warrnambool Olympic Pool committee and the Merrivale and Terang Football Clubs (player and captain). He was also a life member of the Hampden Football League as a long-term Secretary and Treasurer and a secretary of the Warrnambool Football Club.This typewriter is of interest as one belonging to Gordon Toleman, a Warrnambool 20th century resident and a person well-known for his involvement in community activities..1 This is a metal typewriter with black and grey keys and a red and black typewriting ribbon. This journal of cuttings was compiled by Edward Vidler (1863-1942), a prominent publisher, journalist and author in Victoria in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The journal contains cuttings from the Warrnambool Standard and other newspapers and other printed material, mostly from the 1906-1908 years with some cuttings from the 1930s. These cuttings therefore mostly concern Vidler's activities in Warrnambool - his involvement with the Warrnambool and District Progress League and the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Manufactures He was actively concerned with the establishment of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill and the Nestles Factory at Dennington , produced the key historical publication, Warrnambool Past and Present, Sixty Years of Progress 1847-1907 and was the person responsible for the production of the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board with its portraits of 204 male pioneers of Warrnambool and District. The items in this collection of Ecclesiastical Linen were used by St. Andrews Anglican Church on the corner of the Esplanade and 14 Drummond St, Dennington, Victoria. The first Anglican service was conducted on December 22nd, 1907. The church was decommissioned in January 2003. The items donated include Maniples, Chalice Covers, a Goblet Cover, Altar Cloths, Matts, Priest's scarf, armband and sashes, and a bag that is a cover for the Baptismal Towel. HISTORY OF ST ANDREWS, DENNINGTON The land on which St Andrews Church was built in Dennington was surveyed in the 1840s and reserved for church purposes in 1855. In 1889 the Farnham Dairy factory relocated to Dennington and the town began to grow as involvement in the dairy industry increased in the area. In 1896 plans for a church hall on the reserved land were considered and on 22nd December 1907, the first Anglican Service was conducted in Dennington, with 60 people attending. In August 1909 the first building was opened with a midweek evening service conducted by the Rev. J.A. Coe. The Sunday School was opened the following year. In that same year, Nestle took over the Farnham dairy plant. On December 20th, 1914, a new church was opened in memory of Andrew Peacock, who passed away in 1912. The funds had been raised by the community and 150 attended the morning service. The building was described as a simple edifice with a plain exterior and high, wide pointed windows, and a comfortable porch entrance, all of which gave a pleasing impression of light and space. In 1935 the average attendance for morning services was just over 22 people. In 1936 extensive repairs and replacements were carried out. In 1947 the first recorded Pastoral Festival took place and in the same year, a Ladies Guild was formed. In 1954 water services were connected to the church building. Many items of furniture, furnishings and books were donated over the life of the church, including handworked linen items. Further items were added due to the work of the Ladies Guild, as well as donations in memory of church and community members.These items of Ecclesiastical Linen are significant as examples of handworked embroidery and drawn-thread work from the early 20th century. They are also examples of a collection of items used for church services during this period. The Ecclesiastical Linen is also significant for its association with the early development of the local township of Dennington and the importance of setting aside land in the 1850s for the purpose of religious worship. The Ecclesiastical Linen is also significant for its connection to St Andrews Anglican Church, Dennington. The church was funded and attended by the local community in the early 1900s and is now listed on the Victorian Heritage Database (VHD 118083) as a building of historical and social significance. Set of Ecclesiastical Linen. The items were once used in St. Andrew's Anglican Church, Dennington, Victoria, between the years 1907 and 2003. All of the handmade items are in white fabric. Some also have embroidered emblems, tassels and drawn-thread work. White embroidery thread has been used for most of the decorated items, with the following exceptions, which have been embroidered with coloured thread; the communion linen, the Priest's scarf, armband and sash, the altar cloths, mats and a cover for the baptismal towel. This certificate was awarded in appreciation of 25 years service to the Nestle Company which operated a dairy factory at Dennington in Warrnambool. The company came to Warrnambool in 1907 and purchased 17 acres at Dennington and a new dairy plant was established by 1911. At its peak it employed 600 people and processed 55000 gallons daily in the milk condensery which is a process whereby much of the water content is drawn from the milk and sugar is added making a product which has a long shelf life and because it is processed at low temperature the milk maintains much of its vitamin content.A certificate which links a local person to a long and well known industry in Warrnambool and the Western district.Cream soft card certificate with red and black text.Mr H Goodall. In the words of Donor, Betty Stone, "Owned by my aunt Mrs Elsie Mary (nee Dale) Towers, born 24 December 1895, daughter of Ellis and Ann Dale, of Latrigg, Wangoom, Warrnambool. This beaded bag was a personal gift from Miss Lake to Elsie Dale sometime in the early 1930s. Miss Lake was a member of a leading Warrnambool family whose property Lyndoch was situated by the banks of the Hopkins River. After completing her nursing course at Warrnambool Hospital and working there for a time, Elsie Dale was appointed Sister-in-Charge of the newly formed Baby Health Centre, which initially operated in temporary accommodation at or near the Council Chambers. In 1928 the Centre moved into new brick premises on Liebig Street. The building comprised of five rooms, a back yard and a front veranda where mothers parked their prams. The Warrnambool Standard reported in February 1928. The purpose of the Clinic is to the saving of infant's life. Many mothers attended the Clinic in the former location. They were able to acquire valuable knowledge from Sister Dale who is in charge of the Clinic and also have their infants weighed and measured each week. During the early days of the Centre Miss Lake, as a patron, took a keen interest in all aspects of the Centre and co-operated very closely with Sister Dale. Miss Lake would often call in at the centre while her uniformed chauffeur would wait beside her limousine parked in the street outside the Baby Heath Centre. I also recall my aunt driving to Lyndoch to discuss matters concerning the Centre with Miss Lake. Miss Lake purchased this evening bag in England, and upon her return from her overseas tour in the early 1930s, presented it to Sister Dale as a token of appreciation. Dedicated to her vocation, Sister Dale gave unstintingly of her effort, time and resources to create an attractive venue for mothers to visit. Her contribution to the welfare of all mothers and babies in the Warrnambool area, particularly during the Depression years, was considerable. Sister Dale, who drove a Dodge Tourer car, visited mothers in their homes when necessary and regularly visited the indigenous settlement at Framlingham. Amongst my early childhood memories are those of accompanying my aunt when she drove to the Nestles factory at Dennington to purchase large tins of dried milk baby food which she then delivered to the mothers who lived at the Framlingham settlement. Sister Elsie Dale retired in 1949 and moved to Mooroopna after her marriage to Solomon Towers. This glass jar once contained Australian-made Nestle’s Malted Milk. The jar carries the company’s familiar logo. This jar would have originally had a screw-top metal lid. The large jar may have been used in a canteen, hospitality business or hospital due to its capacity. The jar was owned by Dr W.R. Angus, surgeon and oculist, who lived in Warrnambool with his wife and growing family for over thirty years. It may have been purchased from the Nestle factory in nearby Dennington. The jar was donated by his family and is part of the W.R Angus Collection. Nestles Malted Milk powder is usually added to either hot or cold milk as a nutritious drink supplement. The powder is a combination of evaporated whole milk powder, malted barley and wheat flour. Nestle began in 1867 and its products were available in Australia since the 1880s. Australia had become Nestle’s second-largest export market by 1906 and by 1908 Nestle had set up business in Australia. The Nestle factory in Dennington, Warrnambool, opened in 1911 and was the world’s largest condensed milk plant. For over 100 years the factory produced dried milk powder from the produce of local dairy farmers. It was a major employer for the district until an announcement was made on May 2019 by its recent owner Fonterra that it was closing its Dennington site for financial reasons. This Nestle Malted Milk jar is connected to the history of Warrnambool, as it was owned by the daughter of Dr W. R. Angus and his wife Gladys. It is part of the W.R. Angus Collection, which is notable for still being located at the site connected to Doctor Angus, Warrnambool’s last Port Medical Officer. It is also connected through its manufacturer Nestle. which had a branch in Warrnambool from 1911 to 2019, overlapping the time when the Angus family resided there, from 1939 to the 1970s. The jar is also significant as an example of the early-20th-century food found in local households and businesses, and could have been purchased from the local Nestle factory.Round tall clear glass jar with a wide mouth, short neck and straight sides on a cylindrical body. The jar has been blow-moulded in two pieces with a side seam running from the base to the top of the lip. There are air bubbles in the glass, and the base has been ground flat. The outside of the mouth is threaded. Inscriptions are moulded on one side and there is a round logo with text around an image of a mother bird with three young birds in a nest. The jar once contained Nestles Malted Milk and was made in Australia around the 1920s. The jar is part of the W.R.
